Locusts are crunchy, high in protein and more fattening thanMcDonald'sfries.Locust pizza? The crunchy bugs won’t be topping any pies here, but in Mildura,Australia, where a locust plague is causing major headaches for motorists, golfers and farmers, they’re being served up on a pizza by one enterprising Mildura cafe, according to ABC News [1].

Clouds of locusts in Australia have meant that drivers are finding them plastered across the fronts of their cars, and they’re wreaking havoc at sports events, too.
Local mayor Glenn Milne [2], who got the idea for the locust pizza, trapped some of the insects in a garbage bag.
"You can’t stop finding them when they get killed on your car, but it’s another story when you get out on the oval and try to catch them," he told ABC News.
The pie’s not the only way Mildura residents are eating their way out of the locust plague. They’re exchanging recipes, and some restaurants are considering putting the bugs on the menu, according to the Australian Herald Sun.
"A few of us have thought, maybe dip them in chocolate," Milne told the Herald Sun.
Locusts are 60% protein but 20% fat (more than McDonald’s fries), according to the Herald Sun. So you don’t want to overindulge, obviously. Especially when they are then fried, as they are in some areas of Asia [3].
A Cambodian-style recipe provided by the Herald Sun involves slitting the abdomens of several dozen adult locusts (preferably females), stuffing them with a peanut, and cooking them in a hot wok. Salt and oil are added to taste.
Are they an acquired taste? Apparently so - unless you’re a kid. Jason Deroon [4], a local Baptist pastor, told the Herald Sun that he knows of a school where the kids ate them alive.
"If you let them flutter around in your mouth, apparently they produce a funny sensation," he told the Herald Sun.
