In the past 24 days The Courage Express [1], a converted school bus bought on eBay from Southwest Licking Schools, has taken me to 96 stops in 43 cities, traveling over 6,000 miles. I have helped fill potholes [2] in a Tuscarawas County township with one paved road, been welcomed into the home of Somali immigrants in Columbus, played "corn hole" on Fountain Square [3] in Cincinnati, worshipped with congregations [4] in Akron, Columbus, Cleveland and Youngstown, met with health care advocates in Xenia [5] and students in Toledo [6] and spoken to crowded rooms from Athens to Bowling Green to Lorain to Brecksville.
I know that this is the real Ohio. I know that when I meet people face-to-face, they can really judge for themselves what they want in a leader--and I can learn firsthand what they need. I've tried to set the tone in this campaign that we are one Democratic family, because it is in unity that Democrats will prevail in November.
I have run a campaign consistent with Democratic values of being honest with voters, which often requires courage. I have listened to voters with compassion and understanding. I have worked with determination and commitment in this campaign, because I know public service is about working for the common good, and we're all in this together. A grassroots campaign is the best way to do this. I don't and won't take money from corporate interests that tear at the fabric of a just society.
Tomorrow is primary Election Day. Tomorrow is the day Democrats state their preference for who will be their standard bearer for the November contest that will affect not only the future of Ohio, but of our country. Ohio is the nation's seventh largest state. What will we as Democrats do?
Please be sure that your friends, neighbors, and family all vote on primary Election Day, Tuesday, May 4th. Please help anyone who needs assistance to get to the polls, and let anyone who cannot get there tomorrow know that they can vote in person at the Board of Elections through the end of business today, Monday, May 3rd. You can work the polls [7], too.
Opportunities to change the course of politics are rare. Whether you believe that Ohio's stature in the country should include an experienced, qualified woman to join Senator Brown or whether you believe that a Senator should place people's concerns before corporate concerns, I am here for you.
Thank you for all that you do.
Jennifer Brunner
Ohio Secretary of State and
Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate
