Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11), whose representative base includes parts of Cleveland and its eastern suburbs, has issued a press statement regarding the detonation of a bomb yesterday in Israel in the area of a crowded bus stop in Jerusalem that killed 1 person and injured others, including a Cleveland Hts. woman who had arrived from the states to visit her sister.
Leah Green, who is Jewish, stepped off the bus right in the area of the explosion, authorities said. At least 49 others were injured.
"I was saddened to learn that one of my constituents, a 19 year old Cleveland Hts High School student, was injured in the March 23 terrorist bombing in Jerusalem," said Fudge. "I offer my deepest condolences to the families of those killed and wishes for a complete and speedy recovery for all of the people who were injured."
The young Cleveland Hts. woman is in the hospital recovering from wounds and burns, and reportedly used her hands to put out the fire on her legs from the bombing.
The woman killed in the blast was a British woman named Mary Jean Gardner, a Bible translator originally from Orkney, Scotland.
Fudge called the terrorist attack reprehensible and called for peace in Israel.
"Not only do I condemn in the strongest terms this terrorist act, but also the rockets and mortars fired from Gaza in recent days," the congresswoman said. "I would hope that people of good conscience agree that violence that targets innocent civilians is a heinous act wherever it occurs and I believe the people of Israel have a right to live in peace and a right to self-defense."
The decades long war between Jews and Arabs in the Holy Land is a sophisticated one that draws support on both sides of the controversy, and even then it is difficult to win any side over because the conflict that brews is entangled in a global analysis that advocates for both sides have proven debatable at all ends. In short, there is war between the Palestinians that govern along the 146 mile Gaza strip in Israel and Jews of Israel, and the affiliates of both.
