An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 struck today, Friday December 7, at 5:18 PM roughly 300km off the coast of Japan [1]‘s main island, Honshu. The earthquake caused a 1-meter high tsunami, but is said not to have disrupted power. No deaths have been reported.
Although this event was only about one fortieth as powerful as Japan’s 8.9-point Miyagi Prefecture earthquake of April 2011, it is still a very important episode. In comparison, the Taiwan [2] earthquake in 1999 that caused significant damage in Taipei and stopped semiconductor manufacturing in Hsin Chu had a magnitude of 7.6, and California’s 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that stopped production in Silicon Valley measured 6.9.
