Two vehicles, a commercial truck and a car, were shot about 3:20 a.m. Tuesday [2] on Ohio 8 in Akron. A 35-year-old man in a car was hit in the leg. Witnesses told police the gunman fired shots from an SUV driving in the same direction. Edwards said investigators believe the victim was targeted. The truck was shot by accident, Edwards said.
Other incidents include:
- Shortly before midnight on Sunday, a car was shot by someone traveling in another car as they drove along Interstate 75, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer [3]. Three people were shot, including one who was severely injured from shots fired from a rifle. The passengers in the car were on their way to a nightclub, according to police. Police have not made any arrests.
- In southwestern Michigan, at least five cars were struck by what investigators believe were bullets from between July 29 and Aug. 21, CNN reported [4]. Most of those shootings — on Interstate 94 and Interstate 69 in Calhoun County — happened during the daytime, according to WOOD Channel 8 [5] in Grand Rapids. No one was injured, but police believe the shootings are related.
- In Durham, North Carolina, a man was shot in his torso about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, according to WRAL-TV [6]. A woman riding in the passenger seat was shot in the leg.
- In East Charlotte, North Carolina, a man driving about 6 p.m. Saturday was shot. The man told WSOC-TV [7] that the shooter's car swerved up behind his car, then fired one shot that hit his car.
- In Phoenix, Arizona, someone shot at four cars driving on Interstate 10, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety [8]. All four shootings happened from Saturday to Monday. A 13-year-old girl suffered a cut to her right ear but no one else was injured.

AKRON, Ohio — A Tuesday morning highway shooting in Akron mirrors several incidents across the country.
Car shootings were reported in Akron, Cleveland, Cincinnati, North Carolina, Arizona and Michigan beginning July 29. Investigators do not believe they are all connected. In some of them, the victims appear to have been chosen at random.
"Often in these cases it has to do with the company you keep and the habits you have," Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards said in an interview Tuesday.

Edwards also said that highway shootings pose difficulties for investigators because there are typically no surveillance cameras that record and store images along interstates and state highways. Other times, shell casings that are valuable evidence often remain in the car.

In the Phoenix shootings, investigators are trying to determine if the shootings are connected, but so far said the only connections appear to be that the drivers were using the same highway, according to spokesman Raul Garcia.
Garcia said traffic was moderate to heavy during the shootings that happened on Saturday and Sunday. Garcia said it appears the shots were fired from another moving car, but investigators have not ruled out other possibilities.
"This is obviously very dangerous," Garcia said. "We're fortunate there have been no fatal injuries."
