I will soon be planting my garden in East Cleveland. There are many varieties of herbs, vegetables, annuals, perenials, trees and shrubs that I would like to include. My yard is a clean slate. There is no sign of any past plantings with the exception of an evergreen by the front porch that must be at least 50 years old.
I decided that I will have to include some pansies when I found out that there used to be a large pansy farm in East Cleveland around the end of the 19th Century. It was located near the site of the East Cleveland Public library. I would like to find some pictures of it. So far I have looked through some boxes of archived photos in the East Cleveland Public, there are many interesting photos in this collection, but none of the pansy farm.
I did a little research on pansies. I have always liked them. They are easy to grow and add some early or late season color to the beds when other flowering plants are affected by the chill. I liked them even more when I read on Wikipedia that they have long been a symbol of free thought.
