You could watch two of the most pathetic Americans of our time on television tonight trying to evade responsibility.
President George W. Bush tell us, “We are in a recession…This is in large part because of severe problems in our housing, credit and financial markets, which have resulted in significant job losses.”
The job losses announced today were 533,000 last month with 10.3 million people now out of work. More surely to come.
Is Bush kidding? Is he that far from reality to state the obvious but take no personal responsibility? Is he part of the generation that lecture Americans that they need to teach their children to take responsibility?
Did you have nothing to do with our situation, Mr. President?
Then there was O. J. Simpson, choking back tears, and saying, “I didn’t mean to steal anything from anybody… I’m sorry. I’m sorry for all of it.”
“I didn’t mean to hurt anybody and I didn’t mean to steal from anybody,” said Simpson, facing possibly 33 years in jail.
Tell me that these are not two men who well represent much of America today. Tell me that recent generations haven’t allowed such behavior and enjoyed the ride that’s now over for so many.
Too bad that Bush isn’t paying the price that Simpson will. He certainly deserves that and more.
And we – we adult Americans – deserve similar shame. Unfortunately, it is our children and our grandchildren who will pay the price.
Hopefully, they will have the fortitude and courage that will be required.
