Cleveland police investigate two men's deaths on West Side

Plain Dealer, The (Cleveland, OH) - Sunday, September 8, 2002

Police yesterday were investigating two unrelated slayings on the West Side.

One victim, shot several times, collapsed on a sidewalk near Denison Park, and the other fell to the floor of a kitchen after a domestic dispute on West 69th Street, authorities said.

Isaac Johnson, 28, got into a fight early yesterday morning with his girlfriend, police said, and the girlfriend got a 4-inch kitchen knife. The two struggled over the weapon, police said. Relatives staying at the home found Johnson lying on the kitchen floor; a neighbor called 9-1-1, police said.

Johnson was pronounced dead at 4:37 a.m. at MetroHealth Medical Center, authorities said. The Cuyahoga County coroner's office said Johnson was stabbed in the neck.

His 24-year-old girlfriend was arrested on the scene and was in City Jail last night. She had not been charged.

In the other death, Ronald Miller, 39, of Lakewood, was seen walking near Denison Park at West 16th Street and Denison Avenue with two young men on mountain bikes around 8:30 p.m. Friday, authorities said. Shortly after, gunshots rang out and Miller staggered out of the park and collapsed, police said.

He was pronounced dead at MetroHealth at 10:55 p.m., authorities said. The coroner's office said Miller was shot several times. Police are looking for the two men who were on the bikes.

WC Reed Field was a recruitment area like Cudell

If only DOJ had released their report before shooting of Tamir Rice - have to wish that we could go back and make this not happen, but Tamir Rice's mom acknowledges the horrors in her near west side Cuddell neighborhood - Eric Jonathan Brewer just see stories reported at Ohio City Crime Watch... we had this activity in my neighborhood and now I am thinking it moved west because the park epicenter was closed (WC Reed Field) - this is a tragedy for every mother - because how can you lock up your kids? I know families that have moved 3-4 times to keep their kids from being recruited (often against their will) into these gangs.
