It is only fitting for Realneo users to take some time to remember the artist Nam June Paik. In his 73 years, his ground breaking work changed art and the world. In the 60s he was the first artist to make media his medium. He is widely considered the inventor of video art. He is also credited with coining the familiar phrases "information super highway" and the "future is now." If you have visited the current exhibition at MOCA, All Digital, it was Paik who led the way and made it possible.

Thomas Eakins has long been heralded as one of American's greatest painters and an exemplary American but only because evidence of the darker aspects of his life and career have been suppressed. What good are the arts? As the curator of a local sculpture collection, its a question I ask myself everyday. So I was very eager to hear what John Carey had to say in his address Friday, January 20th at The City Club of Cleveland. Carey, an emeritus professor of English at Oxford University, a noted author, book reviewer and public intellectual spoke about his controversial book published in 2005 titled What Good are the Arts. His talk was well organized and based upon a series of questions he asked himself when he began writing his book. The book is based on Carey's own careful conclusions and thorough knowledge of the many theories on the role of art.

"Understanding the New Dynamic: Art, Technology and the Mind" a symposium that took place this past Thursday at the Bolton Theater of the Cleveland Playhouse was a momentous event -- the first of its kind in North America -- according to the moderators of the event, Lev Gonick, Case's Vice President for Information Technology and Len Steinbach, Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Museum of Art.

"All Digital" at MOCA features the work of 8 international artists (one of them, Lynn Hershman Leeson, was born in Cleveland and got her B.A. at Case) who create computer generated art.

The Detroit Superior Veterans Bridge in Cleveland has had a facelift recently with the addition of  “public art” objects – including this complicated heliotropic photovoltaic powered “sunflower” by Don Harvey - but the artists don’t have their names anywhere in sight  along the sidewalk across the bridge.  That’s an oversight which needs correcting. 

First ever retrospective of the artist's textiles and drawings 1979-2005. Opening reception is free.

Peter Mollenkof was born in Philadelphia but has spent much of his career in Tokoyo, Japan as an art historian and art critic. The subjects of his drawings take inspiration from flora and fauna, outer space, microscopic organisms and the human body. There is a tension between naturalism and the unnatural in his subjects that seem to hover in ambiguous spaces.

In late November the Rockefeller Greenhouse turned into a sea of poinsettias, so colorful, so beautiful, it's almost beyond belief! I would n't try to count them but I would guess that there are close to 1,000 poinsettias of various sizes placed among the cacti and tropical plants that live in the greenhouse year-round.

Anyone who has spent much time in Louisiana knows the Blue Dog of artist George Rodrigue. A friend of mine sent me a link to a website for a signed poster by Rodrigue raising money for the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. It's a classic image and worthy cause so I thought I'd pass it along. You can learn more and order the poster here.

These and other questions that explore the impact of new technologies on contemporary life and culture will be addressed by eminent artists, cognitive scientists, museum educators, visual literacy experts and technologists at a free, public symposium, Understanding the New Dynamic: Art, Technology and the Mind on Thursday, January 19, 4-6 p.m. in the Bolton Theater at the Cleveland Play House, 8500 Euclid Avenue. This event complements the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland’s “All Digital” exhibition, on view January 20 through May 7, featuring the pioneering work of eight artists who use digital technologies in their work. It is open Tuesdays and Thursdays and staffed by some very nice volunteers.They have special tables set up for the holidays with holiday decorations -- some vintage and all very cheap.
