Bo Diddley died yesterday. We should all appreciate people before they die, but his was a great life and I can say that I appreciated his life lesson. He came to perform at Miami University, while I was in college there and I worked on the student program board, so I saw a bit of the off-stage persona, as well as the on-stage persona.

Solar Cup 2008...... The Solar Cup Program Solar Cup is a seven-month program that begins in the fall, in which high school teams totaling about 900 students build and race solar-powered boats at Lake Skinner, in Temecula Valley, learning about conservation of natural resources, electrical and mechanical engineering, problem solving and much more.

Where do the tracks take us? Pondering the fate of trains in America. My Aunt just told me about the Hiawatha Trail in Idaho. Interesting to see how it is financed. This shot was taken in Frostburg, MD, with a simple, plastic box camera--no gizmos. More shots attached.

Here are two interesting articles outlining next generation enterprise opportunities focused on the Millennial market, the trend toward higher levels of mobility, and advertising and communication. Don't think in actual terms of "next generation" because the market is already here!

Single agendas have no place in large scale collaborations that engage multi-state agreements and alignment of resources. The cost is high: time investment (just think of calculating one Governor and that Office's staff time, then multiply by eight states), tried patience, and a splintering of camps generating what Jack Ricchiuto calls, "shadow conversations" deteriorating future interest in the next collaboration opportunity. Worse yet, people act as if we have time. What do citizens have to say about this? Is this efficient and productive? What's your take on this?

 I am continuing my theme of kites driving the economy. Today I introduce another type of kite - this kite is an exhilarating transportation vehicle. With fuel prices going up (which is good) our entertainment outlets will be modified. Power boats will be the losers, and wind powered sports will be the winner (which is good).

 Cleveland's Port Authority has been spending money on "consultants" studying the feasibility of operating a ferry across Lake Erie to Port Stanley, Ontario. In 2004 Toronto was served by a fast passenger and auto ferry from Rochester, New York. The Rochester-Toronto ferry service operated for one summer. The photo above is the empty Toronto terminal - now occupied by a movie making business. In 2007 Bill Callahan reported on the Cleveland ferry spending on his blog. A 2006 report in the Painesville News-Herald outlines the complexity of setting up a ferry service - whether in Lake County or Cuyahoga County.

 There are people and organizations working on establishing a healthy view about automobiles. In Toronto, Canada Streets are For People. org has created a brilliant crowd stopper - a CAR PLANTER! Almost everyone, me included, did a double take as they walked by and noticed that the hood of the car was a lawn, the moon roof was hatching a healthy tree, and the trunk was full of rooted shrubs. The window glass makes it easy to see if the soil is moist or dry - every pot should be so well designed. "PARKS - NOT PARKING" one message proclaimed. I am thinking of what model car I will use in Cleveland - anyone have a place to park the nursery vehicle? Here's the Mission Statement from the Streets are for People web site : Mission Statement!Since 2002, Streets are for People! has used costumes, trumpets, and big tricycles to liberate the commons from the mundane rule of that deadly beast — the automobile. We deliver the straight-up message that CARS SUCK, while creating the city we all want to live in, a comfortable place where laughter, romance, and dancing children fill the streets.

Anybody can dream dreams. They don’t deserve big headlines on the front page of our only daily newspaper. So will the Plain Dealer please stop acting as the public relations outlet of downtown developer dreams! I know that we all want to hear “good news” about our economic progress. However, “good news” that never seems to materialize is “bad news.”
