Centers for Families and Children Director Elizabeth Newman has announced that CFC will close the Old Brooklyn-Brooklyn Centre neighborhood daycare on July 31st this year.  FTR - the Archwood United Church of Christ building PASSED all federal inspections and staff received highest rating 5 stars!


Please call her and express your concern. Many generations of families have grown up w/the continuity of kind and loving service provided by the wonderful teachers at WSEM Archwood Headstart (now Centers for Families and Children's Archwood Early Learning Centers). Ms. Newman has stated that the center can no longer continue at UCC Archwood because they deem the structure "unsafe" - however she would not divulge why she considers it "unsafe." Archwood United Church of Christ has served this neighborhood with a daycare location for generations - with staff who can serve our uniquely diverse community - 50 + families will lose the continuity of service provided by staff who speak American Sign Language, Spanish, Arabic, Cantonese and other languages - and have been specially trained to address autism, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and other chronic conditions. How many daycares within walking radius Metrohealth??

The International Services Center and Catholic Charities Refugee Project have specifically placed NEW AMERICANS in the neighborhoods adjacent to Metrohealth campus -because it is first stop for these families in transitioning to citizenship and life in Northeast Ohio. (we were also ideal when we had Aldis and we have lost so many services already).

Brooklyn Centre was/is especially attractive to families who did not speak English as their first language - because of access to Metrohealth Main Campus, which is, quite possibly, also the largest LANGUAGE BANK for Cuyahoga County.  Metrohealth staff can provide service in 170 languages.  The Cleveland Clinic and UH can not compare their services to Metrohealth when it comes to ability to serve the broadest cultural community.  Furthermore, many of these New Americans find their first employment at Metrohealth Hospital.  There is a desperate need to continue with the continuity of daycare provided by the Archwood Early Learning Center.  New Americans from the Congo Republic Africa are now resettling in Northeast Ohio and more are expected to follow.  


Social Service or endless nightmare

I had a very wise administrator (Jan Ridgeway) who cautioned me to NEVER call 696-KIDS no matter how bad it might seem to me that there was an issue with a child or family.  In my professional capacity, I am not  in loco parentis 

After what I went through yesterday for a friend - I know now why - it is always best to let a family work out their issues rather than EVER engaging the system.  The system will eat you alive - it's designed to keep a lot of people employed - and lots of those folks make WAY too much money.

 The child is just a placeholder - a cog - and that child is doomed in this system.

Centers for Families - more dirty than ever


Having 13 staff members who make over $100,000 must be tough.  I guess the food centers don't rake in the bucks like the child care centers.  But, can't have a child care center in a church...oh no!

When I first published this in 2016 w/2013 990- 13 people made over $100K >> now 2017 report (latest on Guidestar) shows 28 people making over $100K $!##!$$

Poverty is the $$$ gravy train

Why would ANYONE want to end poverty in Northeast Ohio - certainly the folks at Centers for Families, Cleveland Housing Network et al.  can't "afford" to have folks come off the rolls...

First Year Cleveland is seeking a nonprofit executive to lead the effort in Greater Cleveland, Ohio to eliminate infant mortality and improve the health and well-being of women and their families through the provision of comprehensive, supportive services offered in communities where they live.
The organization First Year Cleveland (FYC), soon to be a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation, has been established by Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley, and Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish, and includes major stakeholders in the hospital and philanthropic community. FYC has been created to serve as the lead organization in Greater Cleveland to reduce infant mortality by providing direct services to some of the most vulnerable citizens in the community — pregnant and postpartum women, and their infants living in socially, economically and medically depressed communities. The primary mission of First Year Cleveland is coordinate the activities of local organizations and funding sources to maximize the impact of current successful strategies to reduce infant mortality.
The creation of FYC is accompanied by new sources of funds from the state Medicaid program, new investments by city and county government, and other new revenues to support this objective.
The executive director (ED) reports to the board of directors of FYC, and with the board, is responsible for articulating the organization's vision, developing the organization's strategic partnerships, managing and supporting the staff and leading the organization's advocacy efforts. In specific, the ED will:

  • Lead the organization's management team and ensure that program objectives are achieved in a financially sound manner

Demonstrate strong personal and strategic leadership and integrity

  • Have a proven record of implementing strategy to assess and meet community needs and

identify evolving needs, as well as evaluate progress and quality

  • Develop and maintain relationships with local health departments, hospitals, community

partners, faith-based organizations serving the same population, stakeholders, donors, staff,
and board members

  • Provide visionary and strategic leadership and translate vision into measurable strategies and

concrete actions that advance the mission of PVC
Oversee financial and administrative functions and assess availability of resources to meet current community needs and increase the organization's sustainable funding base
Oversee programs and services and evaluate effectiveness to ensure desired outcomes

  • Maintain and support a collaborative senior leadership team
  • Understand and use data to measure outcomes

Ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate an ability to quickly become an engaged, inspiring, inclusive, innovative, ethical and visionary leader. Candidates will bring a variety of experiences and attributes to FYC, including:

  • Five or more years senior level organizational management experience in a nonprofit or similar organization
  • Successful track record in fund development with experience in working with funders, foundations, and government grants
  • The ability to collect, use and interpret data to measure outcomes and evaluate success
  • Experience working with a board of directors and developing engaged and effective governance
  • Business acumen and experience with nonprofit or similar entities in the areas of fiscal management, budgeting, and operations
  • Commitment to and skill with community involvement and engagement, and collaboration with

other organizations and partners

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and proven track record of using positive

communication skills to build internal and external relationships

  • Use of basic computer technology and familiarity with social networking
  • A background in or familiarity with maternal and child health, public health, or other related field is preferred
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Knowledge of Greater Cleveland, its environment, people, culture, issues and relationships, or

alternatively, relevant experience in an urban community
