ORIGINAL CAPTION: The sun unleashed a massive solar storm today (June 7) in a dazzling eruption that kicked up a vast cloud of magnetic plasma that appeared to rain back down over half of the sun's entire surface, NASA scientists say.

The solar storm hit its peak at about 2:41 a.m. EDT (0641 GMT), but the actual flare extended over a three-hour period, said C. Alex Young, a solar astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center who runs a website called The Sun Today, in a video describing the event.

"The sun produced a quite spectacular prominence eruption that had a solar flare and high-energy particles associated with it, but I've just never seen material released like this before," Young said. "It looks like somebody just kicked a giant clod of dirt into the air and then it fell back down."

Be thankful that the sun explosion was not facing the Earth

The images here are wonderful profiles of this blast. To my knowledge, such a huge solar flare, if exploding directly in the direction of the Earth, could be massively devastating for satellites and Earthly electrical transmittion systems. It could be like living in a History Channel docudrama. Apparently our fortunes are partly determined by the spin of the Sun and the location of the Earth.

Little town square full 'O flags

But I missed the best images.   I was in a bus and went by the square just as the sun was setting....the wind was blowing out all of the 200 or 300 flags.  Really dramatic.

I got off the bus and hiked back to the square, but by the time I got there the sun was mostly down below the adjacent house roof tops, and the wind had died to nothing.

I imagine the mom and daughter had stepped into the flags for the same reason I had walked back to them - dramatic photo.

Each flag had a name of a service person.  

Very serious.
