no more small compressive arch bridges like this

 These old bridges are beautiful examples of form following function.

But, they are time consuming to fabricate and construct.

Take a look at the newest bridge over the Cuyahoga - the Inner Belt bridge.  

Just horisontal deep section GIRDERS

Metalurgy has improved.   Much higher tensil strengths and yields. Now we can just roll the beam.  Spit it out at the mill.    No fab necesary. 

Long spans in the 200 foot + range  can be made with no fab.   Just crane in a few girders.

Today's bridges don't look very attractie though.

  My Irish grandfather and his brother worked on these type of bridges...no one today can reproduce this level of craftmanship.
