Drug Giant Takes on Global Health - Former Merck Chief at The City Club of Cleveland

CLEVELAND, OH—Raymond V. Gilmartin, former president, chairman and CEO of Merck & Co., Inc., will speak on the topic “A New Role for Corporate America: Partners in Global Health and Development� at noon on Friday, July 29, 2005, at The City Club of Cleveland.

Gilmartin, who will serve as special advisor to Merck’s executive committee until his retirement in 2006, will speak about Merck’s philosophy of serving the company’s interest by serving the public’s interest. He will also explain how corporations are increasingly trading in isolationist philosophies for new plans to collaborate and address the world’s pressing health care problems.

Merck & Co., Inc. is the fifth largest global pharmaceutical company and maker of Vioxx, a drug it withdrew from the market last year.

Gilmartin is vice chairman of the Healthcare Institute of New Jersey and a past chairman of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America, now serving on its executive committee. He is a trustee of the Healthcare Leadership Council and chairman of Valley Health System, Inc.

Gilmartin also serves as chairman of the Council on Competitiveness and the board of associates of the Harvard Business School. He is a member of the Business Roundtable and serves on the boards of General Mills and the Public Service Enterprise Group.
