Realneo - Original news source? and/or Syndicator/Aggregator? Does Google care?

Like every reader, my attention is grabbed by news reports about creativity and unique events.

Today, Google News carried a piece about the two Canadian high school fellows who sent a helium balloon with cameras to the stratisphere and then recovered the cameras.  The news media has dubbed the advanture "Lego Man in Space" because the balloon carried a Lego man holding the Canadian maple leaf flag and the on board cameras recorded images of the man/flag against the curvature of the earth.

A HOW-TO FOR ARCHIVING TO COMPUTER YOUR CELL PHONE VOICE MESSAGES

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 18:48.
There are many messages which may have significance which you want to transfer from your cell phone and save on your laptop - so you are not at the mercy of the cell phone company storing/losing them for you.

I was asked to help figure out how to extract and archive to computer a voice mail  (from my acquaintances’  old friend who had left a message and had since died – my friend wanted to preserve that last voice)  on my friend’s phone.

Explaining Frost patterns - contamination, speed of freezing, ,extropy, entropy, lots more....

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 01/23/2012 - 14:37.

This dual style frost pattern formed on the inside of a storm window glass - the straight line frost was towards the center of the window and the "crystal" patterns are near the edge of the glass.

A little Mystery to figure out..." Comment to FO's post

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 01/22/2012 - 11:23.

People are very complex, and we all don't think alike or see things the same way.   It is always a challenge to try to understand the messages other people  are sending our way.   Sometimes it is difficult.  Sometimes we need  to separate the message from the messenger.  It is all confusing.

Glass cutting is just crystal crushing

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 19:59.

Cutting glass is an exercise in preparation.

First you need a flat table surface which has rug, resilient rubber, or other soft surface on it.

Second, the glass surface needs to be  clean.  Very clean.  Especially if you are attempting to cut old glass - make sure that the surface has no paint, grit, etc. on it.   Dirty glass and your cut will likely fail.

Formula for floundering your cities: Buffalo has it same as Cleveland

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 01/16/2012 - 17:22.

online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204409004577156603296740624.html

The Wall Street Journal link has an editorial by Steven Malanga which runs through the "economic development" boondoggles to which Buffalo NY has subscribed.

The funding ideas sound much like those which have done nothing but harm in Cleveland, right down to the ubran light rail line which sounds just like our goofy "lakefront" rail line.

Jobs created in Bonaire by Billionaires in Venezuelia

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 01/15/2012 - 23:21.

You didn't subscribe to this post, so please disregard.   You can't see us.

Anyway, the only way we in Bonaire are able to produce pottery and export it to Venezuela is because there are no government regulation in Venezuala and no taxes on the 1% there.

So, of course, there are lots of jobs in Venezuela and those jobs actually move offshore to the Dutch West Indies.

Crazy, isn't it, how trickle up works?

Winter (edifying) Virtual Vacation from NEO - Wanna Go!?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 19:01.

As I have been looking back through a hard drive for images for a story, it dawned on me that perhaps there could be a popular appetite for taking a virtual vacation - not to carouse, but to get educated and to gain a bit of vitamin D from exposure to something other than neo.

Harry Potter - Where have all the phone booths gone?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 01/14/2012 - 15:21.

public telephone booths Bonaire WI 2004

Less than a decade ago we refered to "home telephone", "work telephone", "public telephone' - these descriptions are pretty much history.

Instead of a phone being in a "place" where you go to use it, our bodies are now the "place" for phones.

A recent study, linked here, demonstrates that  heart attacks dramatically increase with grief.  Besides grief- for example caused by the death of a loved one- other emotions like anger, depression, and anxiety also dramatically increase the risk of heart attack.

Another job Americans won't do:  grow garlic.

How many tenants live in a dark apartment - in Cleveland, Ohio?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 12/25/2011 - 18:19.

In Cleveland, Ohio, there are blocks of apartments (like the one in the image above) which don't have any lights on inside at 8:00pm.   I wonder what the 2010 census could tell us....

Are the tenants just all behind in their Cleveland Illuminating bills? or are these apartment blocks just empty?

Possitively Cleveland!

Sitting Shiva - when you've lost your 16 year old daughter.....

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 12/25/2011 - 16:39.

I was staying with friends when I heard about this tragedy, and I immediately got a splitting migrane.

I couldn't imagine the intensity of grief the parents and family were enduring.

At at time like this you would want to crawl into a hole and drown in your depression...

So the Jewish culture over centuries has developed an antidote - about as good as it can be - sitting Shiva.

NYCity's HIGH LINE - elevated rail road re-used as pedestrian corridor - very cool!

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 12/24/2011 - 12:45.

i

I had never heard about this industrial re-use project until a relative gave me a heads up and gave me a slide show (image above credit CEB)

The rail road right of way is on a viaduct - built decades ago - above street level and in numerous places went through the commercial warehouses and industrial buildings which the rail line served.

Curly American White Ash - Fraxinus americana

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 12/15/2011 - 21:57.

Recently I lent a hand at removing some dead limbs from a white ash tree.   The trunk on the tree is in the 48 inch diameter range - and when I counted growth rings in the 20 inch diameter limb which was removed - the limb had been up in the sky defying gravity for 125+ years!

Pretty amazing.
