IS THIS PUBLIC ART, USING HOSPITAL BEDSHEETS, IN DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND, OHIO -- OR SOMETHING ELSE?

PERHAPS A WRAPPING BY CHRISTO – THE ACCLAIMED ARTIST?

NO! IT’S NEITHER!

The photograph shows protective fabric enclosures for the new Cuyahoga County Administration Building – currently under construction -- at the corner of Prospect Avenue and East 9th Street in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

As the fabric enclosures have been designed by engineers (as are the Christo wrappings – designed by structural engineers) – and are not making any visual statement -- the art world ignores them.

The structure is being built by Geis Companies at a cost of $75.5 million with a scheduled occupancy of July 15, 2014. The county will rent the building from Geis for 20 years with an option to buy it at the end of the lease period for one dollar.

The county has already vacated the previous headquarters at the corner of Lakeside Avenue and Ontario Street and temporarily moved to seven county-owned buildings in downtown.

The previous headquarters is scheduled for demolition to make way for the 600-room, $260 million, 30-story, Convention Center Hotel.

Note: The photograph of the construction site was taken on Fri. 12-27-13.

The steel structure for the 8-storey County Building was topped out on November 18, 2013. Here is the link to the Youtube clip:
