A Mayoral conflict of interest to exploit

Submitted by Lee Batdorff on Mon, 04/19/2010 - 01:49.

There is a direct conflict of interest in Mayor Frank Jackson's dual roles as Mayor of Cleveland, and controlling the Cleveland Public Schools.

This conflict is illustrated in the potential property tax values that will be distoryed if the Mayor's proposal, (at the behest of the Ohio Department of Mental Health), to build the so-named, "Mayor Jackson Mental Hospital,"  on Euclid Avenue at E. 56th St.

Property Taxes go largely to public schools.

Full view of the second much larger patio - off-street parking lot

Again, a picture can explain more than words.  These businesses clearly create some of their own problems by not utilizing the sites for the intended and required purposes.  Funny thing is that when you submit evidence to the Board of Zoning Appeals, it is under oath.

A view of the petition that divides the two patios and the curb cut parking lot.

This photo depicts the first and second patio as well as evidencing the curb was cut to accomodate the off street parking of vehicles.  There is a petition and entrance way from the small 32 seat patio into the larger non-conforming patio.

What must be remembered is that there are several bars/restaurants/nightclubs that guilty of the exact same thing - after the ratified resolutions are handed down by BOZA granting the parking variances, business owners construct illegally permitted patios in the designated required parking sites.

Modern Day Moats

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 04/18/2010 - 13:51.

What if you lived in a neighborhood community surrounded by a moat???

Sounds far-fetched? This diagram shows a gated housing complex in Texas that is surrounded on three sides by a water detention basin system.  How can we make moats work for us in NEO??

What Makes A Natural Disaster Disastrous Enough?

Submitted by Grace Roulet on Sun, 04/18/2010 - 03:21.

In the 2000s, there have been two HUGE international natural disasters that the United States has sent aid for and one that, as far as I know, we have not really helped much. The first of the two the United States has spent millions in aid for is the tsunami in 2004. This disaster was caused by a whopping 9.3 magnitude earthquake that sent a wall of water crashing down on countries in the Indian Ocean. This disaster caused around 184,167 deaths, 125,000 injuries, about 45,725 people to go missing, and around 1.69 million people were displaced.

51But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, ! but we will all be transformed52It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.

What do you expect from the new Cuyahoga County Executive in 2011?

Submitted by ANGELnWard14 on Fri, 04/16/2010 - 18:07.

So, government is going to change come 2011 in Cuyahoga County with new leadership and management. In November, we are going to vote for new County Council members and a new County Executive... what are we voting for this time?

I sincerely am curious-without ridicule, what the citizens of Cuyahoga County would ask for from a County Executive? If you had a candidate in front of you, what would be your humble CITIZEN EXPECTATION LIST?

First nationally available entrée in America to pack more than 3,000 calories - Outback Ribs Full Slab

Tip of the Hat to Steve Cadwell, Director of the American Holisitic Medical Association, for pointing me to a site with the 20 worst restaurant foods in America, which is worth scrolling through to get a sense of the health risks of some typical restaurant foods. Here's a highlight: "We hope the guys at Guinness World Records are paying attention: Outback now holds the dubious distinction of serving the first nationally available entrée in America to pack more than 3,000 calories. Congratulations."

Opening statement in City Club of Cleveland debate by U.S. Senate Democratic candidate Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 04/15/2010 - 14:27.

I was pleased to see posted on Secretary of State Brunner's campaign for U.S. Senator blog a video provided by the Cleveland Plain Dealer of her opening remarks at the City Club debate, this week. This was the highlight of the entire debate... watch to the end, as she differentiates herself from Fisher - nice to see the PD make this available, including allowing it to be embedded in other sites.

Bloggers for Brunner: Richard T. Andrews Writes "Brunner the Best for Ohio Democrats"

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 04/15/2010 - 13:14.

Richard T. Andrews writes an insightful blog called "The Real Deal", which he describes as "Periodic reporting and commentary from Cleveland Heights OH. Primary interests: Cleveland/NEOhio regional public affairs; African American politics, commerce, culture and society; public education; national and international affairs; Cavaliers∫Browns∫Indians." I receive it by email and suggest everyone on realNEO check it out. I strongly agree with his most recent posting "Brunner the Best for Ohio Democrats" and suggest all Ohio voters read through to his posting, which I introduce below:

Rite of Spring

Submitted by lmcshane on Thu, 04/15/2010 - 06:43.

I recently returned from Austin, Texas, with a renewed sense of awe and appreciation for the rich cultural landscape here in Northeast Ohio.

The photo I have included here shows a family engaging in a Texas rite of spring--the annual blue bonnet photo.

Perhaps, those of us in NEO need to establish our own rite of spring as a reminder that life goes on.  Plant a seed.

Weekend Cooling Trend for the Zoo and My New Best Friend

Submitted by fetus1990 on Wed, 04/14/2010 - 21:49.
The Squirrel Slayer.

Earth day's comin'.  It should still be a good day to visit the zoo on Sunday.

Weekend forcast:

Saturday, 49& rain

Sunday, 52&sunny

Normal high is 57.

I should model the two days of data to show we're into a global cooling period.

I was banking on some global warming for a weekend of golf.  Doesn't look good.  Maybe the UN can model warming for next weekend.

Had to post a picture of my new best friend.  RTH
