The Cleveland Institute of Art Student Independent Exhibition 60, running February 17 - April 1, 2006, absolutely engages the visitor and provides the perfect foundation to explore the value of the creative class, the arts, and the CIA to our community. This is an exceptional show of expressive, creative genius articulated by scores of artistic masters, representing a small presentation of the explosive talent found in and radiating from the CIA.

The Digital Photography Special Interest Group of the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group will host a presentation by computer professional Phillip  Williams on the GIMP, a FREE open source graphics creation and manipulation application similar to Adobe Photoshop.  The meeting will be a short "course" showing how to use the GIMP to do common digital imaging tasks, such as manipulating a photo, removing red eye, correcting colors, resizing images and changing them to black & white.

The Student Independent Exhibition is an annual juried gallery show, planned entirely by the students at CIA for their work. This year's exhibition marks its 60th anniversary.  Opens Feb. 17 with a reception from 5pm-8pm.  FREE.  Reinberger Galleries.

It is only fitting for Realneo users to take some time to remember the artist Nam June Paik. In his 73 years, his ground breaking work changed art and the world. In the 60s he was the first artist to make media his medium. He is widely considered the inventor of video art. He is also credited with coining the familiar phrases "information super highway" and the "future is now." If you have visited the current exhibition at MOCA, All Digital, it was Paik who led the way and made it possible.

Noted author, art historian, Case Professor and captivating speaker will discuss his controversial book Eakins Revealed at The Union Club. Thomas Eakins has long been heralded as one of American's greatest painters and an exemplary American but only because evidence of the darker aspects of his life and career have been suppressed. What good are the arts? As the curator of a local sculpture collection, its a question I ask myself everyday. So I was very eager to hear what John Carey had to say in his address Friday, January 20th at The City Club of Cleveland. Carey, an emeritus professor of English at Oxford University, a noted author, book reviewer and public intellectual spoke about his controversial book published in 2005 titled What Good are the Arts. His talk was well organized and based upon a series of questions he asked himself when he began writing his book. The book is based on Carey's own careful conclusions and thorough knowledge of the many theories on the role of art.

"Understanding the New Dynamic: Art, Technology and the Mind" a symposium that took place this past Thursday at the Bolton Theater of the Cleveland Playhouse was a momentous event -- the first of its kind in North America -- according to the moderators of the event, Lev Gonick, Case's Vice President for Information Technology and Len Steinbach, Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Museum of Art.

If you have been feeling starved for art lately you should find the last half of January very satisfying. Major exhibitions are opening this Friday at MOCA, Spaces and the e.gordon Gallery.

"All Digital" at MOCA features the work of 8 international artists (one of them, Lynn Hershman Leeson, was born in Cleveland and got her B.A. at Case) who create computer generated art. 

Opening reception and gallery exhibition, reception featuring wines from the Great Lakes region and local music acts. Exhibition, "Design Values" explores the value of design and its impact on human experience, features artists/recent alumi: Jason Salo, Eric Stoddard, Kathy Blackmore, Adam Carmichael, Beth Halasz and others.

These and other questions that explore the impact of new technologies on contemporary life and culture will be addressed by eminent artists, cognitive scientists, museum educators, visual literacy experts and technologists at a free, public symposium, Understanding the New Dynamic: Art, Technology and the Mind on Thursday, January 19, 4-6 p.m. in the Bolton Theater at the Cleveland Play House, 8500 Euclid Avenue. This event complements the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland’s “All Digital” exhibition, on view January 20 through May 7, featuring the pioneering work of eight artists who use digital technologies in their work. I'm not a fan of the Christmas Story leg lamp, but I thought these sexy little leg earrings were in good taste. I think it was the high quality of the craftsmanship or the beauty of the materials that appealed to me more than the subject, but I thought the concept was clever too. I bought these at the CIA Holiday Sale. I'm not sure who made them -- they did n't include their card with the box and they were not there at the sale.

Yesterday was thrift store shopping, today will be all about art. Tonight I plan to go to the Cleveland Institute of Art Holiday Sale and the Hodge School Open Studio and Exhibition.

    Some of the artists at the Hodge School will have works for sale -- or maybe you could commission something for that special person on your list? One of my favorite locaI  artists Charmaine Spencer will have her basket weave sculptures for sale. The are so beautiful and very affordable!

appointment of Christopher S. Ronayne, as the new President of
University Circle Incorporated (UCI) was announced today, November
14, at UCI’s Annual Meeting by R. Thomas Stanton, Chairman of UCI’s
Board of Trustees. Ronayne will lead the 40-member nonprofit
organization’s efforts to continue the development of University Circle
into one of the country’s premier urban districts. Ronayne is only the
seventh president to serve UCI since its founding in 1957. He succeeds
Terri Hamilton Brown, who is stepping down to join National City Bank.

For the ArtWalk, Asterisk and Doubting Thomas have great shows scheduled... also, the artist showing at Pilgrim Church is cool, and it is worth seeing the place... I went there with a friend and his kids, a few months ago, and the caretaker took us into the belltower and let the kids ring the bell... Quasimdodo style... real trip
