Dust control not effective in preventing children's exposure to residential lead hazards

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 05/22/2006 - 12:00.

It is extremely important to control all dust in and around any home where there is a lead risk. Unfortunately, research shows that where there are lead risks dust control alone has little impact in reducing lead poisoning - the reduction in elevated blood lead levels is measurable and worthwhile but not sufficient to have an overall benefit to the child, or surface a solution for society.

If Beethoven died of lead poisoning, then its good enough for you

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 05/22/2006 - 08:11.

Lots of people know that lead poisoning played a role in the fall of the Roman Empire (lead pipes) but in December 2005 it was learned that Beethoven died of lead poisoning - probably from a combination of pipes, lead seals on wine and documents, crystal, ceramics and paints - they started outlawing lead in Europe at the end of the 19th Century... it took America nearly a century longer...

University Circle Incorporated growing function, context and identity

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 04/23/2006 - 22:20.

For so many reasons, University Circle and its institutions and the surrounding neighborhood are core to what I value in NEO, and I look forward to seeing all that continually expand in significance to me, the region and world. But, University Circle is a small geographic domain, which must be optimized for 21 organizational stakeholders, and their 1,000,000s of stakeholders, including everyone associated with Case, University Hospitals, the VA, CIA, Cleveland Museum(s), Institute of Music, Orchestra, etc., and all others in the community.

In visioning for a better region and future here, consider a broader interpretation of University Circle from the small cultural, healthcare and university center of Cleveland to the center of the entire University Community of NEO.

Author J. Everett Prewitt Did Booksigning at the East Cleveland Public Library

Submitted by Charles on Sun, 04/09/2006 - 23:57.

Everett Prewitt spoke in the 240 seat recital hall, the same room where live jazz often featured. Library Director Gregory Reese, the person responsible for bringing this dream to fruition, told me that portions of the Tri-C Jazz fest will be held at the library. For a listing of future concerts, check out the library's website.

Although I've heard Everett speak before, each time I hear him, I learn something new.  He focused this time on his life and the experiences that shaped his both his voice as an author and Snake Walkers, his first book. Snake Walkers tells the story of the first black reporter at a southern newspaper, who traumatized as a child after witnessing a tragic event, attempts to solve the mysterious disappearance of 14 townspeople and an abandoned town. You can learn more about the book by visiting here.

In describing his motivation for writing, he closed with an African Proverb: until the lions have their own historian, the tales of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.

I must say a few words about the East Cleveland Public Library. The newly remodeled facility is fantastic.

Political Bribery is Not “Business As Usual”

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Wed, 02/01/2006 - 23:20.

Ohio Congressman Bob Ney is certainly entitled to have the facts proved before he’s considered guilty, but it’s a disservice to voters to claim the charges against him are “just politics” or “the way things work in DC.”  By asserting that these allegations are “the way things get done,” supporters drag politics and government lower and give disgusted voters more reasons to give up on government.  To really understand the accusations and why the allegations are more than routine, readers need to understand the nature of the charges and the facts at hand.

Shaker Heights knows looking backwards improves future economic development

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 11/29/2004 - 09:32.

One drive through Shaker Heights makes it clear this is an historically significant community. The Clevelend Plain Dealer recently reported Shaker leaders recognize their historic character as a valuable asset and they have taken steps to protect that, at the City Hall level. While much of the great historic architecture of Northeast Ohio has been detroyed over the years, regional community leaders should take action like has Shaker to preserve what remains - consider the great buildings in areas of Cleveland like Glenville, and in East Cleveland, and picture a future of historic buildings restored to their potential prime, rather than gone forever. Read on about the Shaker initiative, introduced and linked below.

Norm Roulet's notes from REI - presentation by the Glenville Development Corporation on the Future of Glenville.

GDC service area corresponds with the bounderies of Ward 8, an odd shaped neighborhood on the East Side of Cleveland running along Lake Erie from E. 72nd street to around E. 110th, and south including Martin Luther King to University Circle, and environs surrounding (PDF map linked as attachment).Presenting were John H. Cieszkowski, Jr., Business Development Specialist, and Tony R. Diggs, Community Outreach Coordinator. The Glenville Development Corp. website is linked below:

Glenville development corp. website

More information on Glenville is found at Cleveland State University's Neighborhood Link site at http://www.nhlink.net/neighborhoodtour/glenville/

Detailed 2000 census data is posted at http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/census/factsheets/spa32.html

First presenter is John, who points out that despite challenging economic conditions Glenville has wonderful physical assets, a wealth of historic property, close proximity to Lake Erie, parks and University Circle and many other strengths. His presentation focused on many great efforts of the GDC to leverage those strengths to develop the neighborhood's housing stock and quality of life of residents, focused on a bright future.

In order to address issues facing neighborhood retail corridors, GDC participates with 10 other CDCs (Community Development Corporations) as part of the Re-$tore Cleveland program.

ED successes include retail development such as Glenville Towne Center (featuring East Side Market), a McDonalds, video store and Rite Aid - area is nicely landscaped and enhanced with clock tower to accentuate this special retail dsitrict.
