Urban Wind Turbine: A Rare Species Spotted

Submitted by Charles Frost on Sat, 09/22/2007 - 15:03.

Ask a die-hard altpower fan if they’ve ever seen a functional wind turbine in the urban jungle, and chances are, the answer is no. Today we bring you some exclusive footage of this rare species. This Skystream 3.7, built by Altira-backed Southwest Wind Power, sits atop a remodeled corner house in San Francisco’s Mission District. The blades sit on a skinny 45-foot pole dropped in by crane. Here is the turbine in action on Wednesday’s windy afternoon.

URBAN TURBINES - WHY NOT RIDE THE WIND NOW?

JOINT POST BY MILLER (TEXT) AND BUSTER (PHOTO)
The photo above is a copy of a paper flyer from the RTA bus tour at August 07 Ingenuity Fest. Someone decided that photographing the new bus - which cost $860,000.00 each - in front of the Cleveland Science Center wind turbine would look dynamic. So, let's actually DO IT as Susan suggests below.

(The First) Wind Farm Planned For Lake Erie

Submitted by Charles Frost on Sat, 08/25/2007 - 14:34.

Lake Erie is on average relatively shallow and has one of the most productive and popular
Great Lakes sport fisheries. When it comes to walleye (the best eating freshwater fish that ever existed) and yellow perch,
Erie is "hot". So hot, that this Lake Erie based wind farm proposal could make the Cape Wind project proposal look like a playground scuffle, unless the sponsors properly look after any fish and aquatic life issues early on. Because this is the first of many wind farms that will be proposed for
Erie, we can be sure.

Cleveland State U's Rooftop Windmills: U.S. House Panel OKs Seed Money

CLEVELAND (TDB) -- Cleveland State University scientist Majid Rashidi is closer to obtaining federal financial aid to help develop energy-producing "windspires," four of which may soon be spinning on the rooftops of Northeastern Ohio. The House Appropriations Committee has agreed to authorize putting about $1.1 million of taxpayers' cash into the project, which also has backing from the state.

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Cleveland, announced the influential House panel's decision to support the windspires, which are souped up breeze-powered machines without the huge spinning blades typical of windmills. Rashidi wants to set build test devices to see how effectively they function.

Tubbs Jones said the project is an investment in retooling the state's economy and portrayed it as critical to efforts to get Ohio growing again.

WINDPOWER ON THE WATER - EDGEWATER INBOUND

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 07/14/2007 - 18:38.

This is a shot taken over the breakwater last Wednesday, July 11, 2007.  I thought it would be fun to see it up against Norm's Realneo Header.  I'm not sure where Norm's photo was taken - are there any of the same spinnakers in the two photos?

CLEVELAND - RUSH HOUR OUTBOUND OFF EDGEWATER

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 07/12/2007 - 09:27.

Rush hours are abhorrent everywhere (forget inconvenience to us humans - the exhaust is killing the globe), from Boston's SouthEast"Expressway" to the Cleveland Inner Belt and "dead man's curve" (which ODOT will "fix" - right?) to the interstate 5 in LA

But here is a view of a rush hour in Cleveland that is really exhilarating.

BILL MASON - CAPITALIZE ON CAPE WIND IMPASSE

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 06/04/2007 - 16:46.

Ted Kennedy, Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, Robert Kennedy Jr., Senator John Warner, Mitt Romney, Christy Mihos, and Walter Cronkite all have direct personal and family connections to Cape Cod.  They or their family or relatives have vacation houses on the Cape, they have money, and they don’t want Global Warming to be fought in their own back yard.   And you can’t see carbon dioxide.

Edwin at Inner Circle Restaurant

Located in the heart of the historic Hough Bakeries Complex is the Inner Circle, a weekend club and reception facility operated for the past 7 years by the Hot Sauce Williams family. Starting shortly, operation of the Inner Circle will expand to extended hours every day, featuring a cybercafe, meeting space, computer terminals, free wifi, independent film, the Linux Cafe, art, culture, and great food, coffee, and even wine tastings, via a broader partnership of friends. This pan is from the deck and patio area, and features Guyanese chef and reggae performer and DJ Edwin, who will help operate the Inner Circle, shown with Hot Sauce Williams founder LeMaud Williams, as well.

Challenging NEO to become world center for $ multi-billion micro wind industry

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Mon, 04/30/2007 - 20:06.

I recently posted on realneo about a report I saw on CNN profiling Lucien Gambarota, an inventor in Hong Kong who has developed and begun manufacturing micro wind turbines - see http://realneo.org/Micro-Wind-Turbines. He is also working on technologies to capture energy from waves, and hybrids of wind and wave.

Joe Stanley

It is very nice to see my favorite real urban planner Joe Stanley featured on Lee Batdorff's very informative University Circle Blog - and thanks to Joe for mentioning us here at realneo! We set up and host his http://neomainstreet.com site, which is one of the best uses of Drupal in this region, and presents excellent work by a talented planner and designer. Joe is working on all the community development projects I'm involved with, including overall East Cleveland planning and the Star Intergenerational Neighborhood planning and The Intergenerational School, along with other work Joe does independently.

ECOSSystem - Extending Community Open Source System

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Wed, 04/25/2007 - 17:20.

While not currently a powerhouse in Free Open Source Software (FOSS), Northeast Ohio is positioned to begin excelling with FOSS in some very strategic ways that may add great value to the regional economy.

Because of FOSS, we may now bridge the digital divide more quickly and completely here than has any other large urban center in America, we may soon have the highest percentage of workforce properly educated for the new economy, and we may lead the world in some fields of application development and technology innovation with global, open standards, all if the region now embraces FOSS..

Hong Kong Inventors Unveil New Micro-Wind Turbines Suitable for City Dwellers

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Tue, 04/24/2007 - 23:13.

Buzzing Hong Kong is better known for keeping lights on all night and the air conditioner running full blast, not saving energy. But engineers in the city have introduced an innovative wind energy technology than can help both rural and city residents protect the environment and cut down on energy costs - without having to spend a fortune on an expensive device. Claudia Blume reports.

YOUR TAX MONEY THROWN TO THE WIND BY CUYAHOGA COUNTY COMMISSIONERS?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 04/10/2007 - 15:13.

Cuyahoga County has issued  RFQ 8382 for a so called “Feasability Study concerning Lake Eire Wind Energy Center”. See County site here.  Responses are due April 23. 2007  The  "Center" is not a center as in a building, but  an offshore installation of  turbines.

FUTURE VIEW FROM CLEVELAND'S DIKE 14 - WITH FOOT NOTES

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 04/08/2007 - 16:09.

Actually, this is a view from the Peace Bridge which crosses the Niagara River at Buffalo.  The view is through my Greyhound window and shows the (8 – count the blades) Clipper turbines on the huge slag piles of the old Bethlehem Steel mill in Lackawanna.   Look how high the slag is over the ice on Lake Erie.  The turbine towers are over 300 feet tall, so the slag pile is at least 100 feet high - that's the way we used to do it - just dump our debris in the Great Lakes.  Cleveland did that too - Burke Lakefront Airport is on the old City dump.

Electricity generation from Highways

I recall seeing this idea on RealNEO a while back.  Check the following links for means by which we could potentially utilize our existing highway infrastructure to generate electricity.

I received an informative email this afternoon from Richard McDougald Enty, Planning Team Leader, Programming & Planning Department, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, about some of their Transit Oriented Development initiatives and vision. It is very exciting to see this as an active subject for discussion and planning here. I am a strong supporter of Transit Oriented Development and consider it the core foundation on which we should rebuild the City of Cleveland and surrounding suburbs.  Here is the vision from RTA:

AUSTIN POWER, In Quest for Cleaner Energy,Texas City Touts Plug-In Car

Submitted by Charles Frost on Tue, 03/27/2007 - 06:57.

This is from yesterday's Wall Street Journal....  Austin plans on using the local wind power that is generated at night to charge plug-in hybrid car batteries, and then tap into those same car batteries for extra power during the day time.

If they can do it in Austin, why not here in Cleveland, particularly if we are going to be building a thousand wind turbines in our lake? It seems like a nice "green" plan to me.

Radiating from The Star, transformational redevelopment is coming soon to Cleveland and East Cleveland

Star Complex East Cleveland Half Mile Radius and Zones

Since late June, 2006, a growing team of innovative community leaders has been working together with Lamond Williams, the owner of Hot Sauce Williams BBQ, and East Cleveland Mayor Eric Brewer and Community Development Director Tim Goler, and government leadership in Cleveland, to determine how best to redevelop the historic Hough Bakery Complex, formerly the Star Bakery, which Lamond also owns. The objective is to use that redevelopment as a catalyst for transformation of the neighborhoods surrounding that significant property, located on Lakeview, partially in both Cleveland and East Cleveland. On the map above, the Star Complex is in magenta, and the green circle marks a 1/2 mile radius surrounding that - the other colored areas are key neighborhoods and assets within that radius.
