First Folio - Shakespeare in CLE
( categories: )

Thank you Chatham

2016 was a pivotal year for me - I attended SXSW in Austin TX-met folks from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and joined the National Center for Families Learning.  During this time, Cleveland Public Library was recognized as one of only four digital hubs in Ohio and hired Chatham Ewing from academia to manage the digital collection.

Chatham wrote the grant to bring the Folger collection to Cleveland Public Library.  Was he given a pat on the back?  No - he was told to stop submitting grants and to tow the party line.  I was similarly told to stop interacting with colleagues on a national level. The stupidity. My notes from 2016 SXSW Edu where Felton Thomas was recognized and Obama made a guest appearance.  Now the library has no idea what to do with the broadcast journalism collection that John Carroll University decided they couldn't manage.

Our Big Opportunity: Learning gaps widen when children lack access to culturally enriching activities, which are often financially and geographically out of reach for many families.

Our Big Thought  - http://www.bigthought.org/our-programs/library-live/

We engage the imagination through stimulating cultural experiences that are free of charge, leveraging one of the city’s best resources—the public library system.

Our Innovative Approach

  • Each month, we host free, interactive programs at Dallas Public Library branches for participants of all ages.

  • Children and their caregivers can explore various cultural traditions through storytelling, the visual and performing arts.

  • Activities integrate seasonal themes or events (Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Earth Day, etc.), reinforcing pride and understanding by celebrating different cultural backgrounds.

  • Master storytellers and performers bring featured works to life.

Our Impact

We are encouraged that Library Live! has been embraced by the community. This program is designed to increase access among families to literacy-based programming.
