EXCLUSIVE: John Szulczewski, Vietnam Veteran: "Don't just throw me away in the trash like I don't matter. Do something about it."

That's one local veteran during a Channel 3 investigation back in May. Now his war is over in more ways than one. It's taken John Szulczewski five years, but it took us only one phone call. And now the former vietnam vet now has real answers and compensation for the first time.

In 1960 Airforce Staff Sergeant John Szulczewski answered his country's call and ended up in the jungles of Vietnam. But since that war, his country hasn't answered back. Starting in 1961, John was unknowingly given meth three times a day for three years to treat an injury, and claims it caused a rare heart condition. The government later admitted they gave him the drug, but refused to pay for treatment saying the disease isn't recognized by the government.

Szulczewski: "If you went into court and somebody gave your kids meth for three years, they'd go to jail for the rest of their lives. And all these guys are saying is, 'We gave it to you but so what?'"

So we called the VA in Washington, D.C., and a short time later...John was seeing a specialist.

Szulczewski: "I met with him in Salt Lake and within an hour he said I did in fact have primary pulminary hypertension."

And a week after that? A letter, saying he was given 100% disability and more than $2,500 a month, back dated to last year.

Szulczewski: "I couldn't believe it. I had to read it four or five times."

It means for the first time in five years John can afford his pricy heart medication and the opportunity to see a specialist.

Szulczewski: "It's a big difference. It's a live able situation."

Considering what he's been through...

Szulczewski: "I had as many as nine appeals in with three different people."

...He never thought this day would come.

Szulczewski: "Thank you...I'm happy that it's over with. I'm pretty tired with it. It's a long walk and it's done now."

We were able to help John and we would love to help you. We can't promise anything, but what I can say is we'll do our best to keep watching out for you.
