East Cleveland Historical Society: George N. Havens "A Special Time A Special Place"

I have been reading the book "A Special Time A Special Place: East Cleveland Remembered" recently. It was written by George N. Havens  who lived in East Cleveland from 1924 - 1969. It is an interesting and very personal account of East Cleveland in the 30s and 40s.  It reminds me of some of Dick Feagler's reminiscences of Cleveland. It makes me think there must be many interesting stories of East Cleveland, ones not yet published. What stories do the residents of Roxbury Road have to tell?

The story to tell

East Cleveland has a story to tell for all of our ancestors--I hope that these stories get recorded, too.  The African American Genealogical Society of Cleveland is hosting a chock-full two day workshop to hone our storytelling research skills at Cleveland Public Library.   Supreme Archivist Michael Ruffing is one of the presenters and he works with the penultimately Supreme Joan Southgate, who has tirelessly been researching and reliving the historical exodus of families from slavery in the south to a different oppression in the North.  Cleveland was once called HOPE in the lexicon of the underground railroad.  We all have a lot of work to do to make it the City of HOPE.

As more people document and write about and discuss the mess in NEO, there is more hope we will have real change here
