Ori Z. Soltes, Goldman Professorial Lecturer in Theology and Fine Arts, Georgetown University, will compare and contrast the two key Spring holidays in Jewish tradition. He will address history, myth, theology and art in the narrative context of both festivals, the importance of each in shaping Judaism and Jewish identity, and the reflection of these issues in the rich visual traditions of the Haggadah and the Megillat Esther.

Lanphear, MD, MPH Sloan Prof. of Children's Environmental Health & Dir., Cincinnati Children's Environmental Health Ct Reservation | Lead poisoning is still one of the most serious public health concerns facing children in Cuyahoga County. Rates of childhood lead poisoning are well above 20% in many Cleveland neighborhoods and East Cleveland. Cleveland’s rate is in the top five nationally, with the current U.S. overall rate at under 2%. Dr. Bruce Lanphear, The Sloan Professor of Children's Environmental Health and the Director of the Cincinnati Children's Environmental Health Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati, will review new data on the adverse health effects of childhood lead exposure, review the major sources of childhood lead exposure and discuss the regulations and tools necessary to shift our focus toward primary prevention.

Kwame Anthony Appiah, Laurence S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy and the Center for Human Values at Princeton University, was raised in Ghana and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. His many books include two monographs in the philosophy of language as well as the widely acclaimed In My Father's House: Africa in the Philosophy of Culture, which received both the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for nonfiction and the Herskovitz Prize of the African Studies Association.

SPACES mounts the first exhibition in Ohio to explore the idea of Afrofuturism, the subculture that deals with the interplay between time, technology, race and culture in the USA. Seventeen artists, from both historical and future viewpoints, tackle the impact of technology on the physical, social and spiritual lives of black people.
From science fiction to film and cultural exploration, the artists create work in painting, video and video games, sound installation, spoken word, sculpture, cinema and drawings. Conceived by The Soap Factory and Obsidian Arts in Minneapolis, the exhibition Afrofuturism was originally curated by Minneapolis-based artist Ernest Bryant and Suzanne Roberts of Obsidian Arts. SPACES introduced six northeast-Ohio artists into the exhibition.

Spectrum: the Lockwood Thompson Dialogues is a new program created for the Cleveland Public Library by Cleveland Public Art. The topic for the 2006 series is Cultural & Creative Migrations. The April event will bring internationally acclaimed artist Shahzia Sikander together with moderator Kurt Andersen, host and co-creator of Public Radio International’s Studio 360, to discuss topics as diverse as cultural identity and the relationship of technology and globalization to the act of creating art.

The Minority Men’s Health Center will host the 4th Annual Minority Men's Health Fair Wednesday, April 26th in the lobby of the Crile building from 5-8 p.m. Attendees will receive various free health screenings including prostate cancer, blood pressure, glaucoma, cholesterol, sickle cell, diabetes and oral cancer among others. In addition, the health fair will also include health seminars and information tables related to topics such as stroke prevention, smoking cessation, and health and nutrition. The Minority Men’s Health Center ’s goal is to address the striking health disparities that exist in minority men, and provide the necessary information for prevention and treatment of these health problems.
