01/28/2005 - 11:00 Speakers > Dr. Spencer R. Crew Friday, January 28, 2005 12:00 PM Dr. Spencer Crew will speak about the evolution and work of the National Underground Railroad and Freedom Center, which brings to life the inspiring, heroic stories of courage, cooperation and perseverance in pursuit of freedom, especially from Underground Railroad history. Prior to joining the Center in November 2001, Crew served as director of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution. During his 20-year tenure at the Smithsonian, he opened numerous exhibitions, including “The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden� in which he served as one of the exhibition’s curators. His most important publications include "Field to Factory: Afro-American Migration 1915-1940" (1987) and "Black Life in Secondary Cities: Camden and Elizabeth, New Jersey 1860-1920" (1993). Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Dr. Crew was raised in Cleveland and graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in History in 1971.
