REAL.COOP Media Open House Roundtable Planning

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 01/03/2009 - 12:44.

When Doug Clifton became editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, I was in frequent communication with Columnist Tom Brazaitis. I shared with Tom information technology advice to improve the newspaper - like adding email addresses to the articles in the paper (which they didn't do at the time), and completely transforming how they used the Internet. Tom suggested I contact Clifton directly, which I did, and Doug was very receptive to feedback and we ended up corresponding regularly.

comments on dance made elsewhere

Submitted by Susan Miller on Wed, 12/31/2008 - 12:18.

I made a comment at the end of a long discussion on the role of critic to choreographer and audience at Downtown Dancer, a blog in the holler of Manhattan's dance mecca. I add it here as a way to keep track (personally) and to share my thoughts on dance with the NEO dance interested community.

Joe Goode PG Stay Together

I wrote this review of Joe Goode Performance Group when they visited Cleveland in 2007. It was published in Coolcleveland. Here it is gathered with my other dance musings to add to the file.

More great dance like this in NEO, please.

In today's news we learn of the end of an era - Jim Mazurkeiwicz retires and Potter Mellen closes its doors.

Here's a sample of Jim's work from the still live Potter Mellen website:

Recipe for Holiday Cheer ... circa 1773, Egg Nog, The Red Lion Inn, Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Submitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Thu, 12/25/2008 - 03:24.

Holiday travel in America in the eighteenth century was not for the faint of heart. When you reached the inn you needed serious refreshments. This recipe is so rich and delicious, its nothing like what you find in plastic jugs in the grocery cooler today.

1 1/2 cups cane sugar
12 eggs (organic)
1 quart heavy cream
1 quart milk
1 quart Meyer's Rum
1 cup bourbon
2 tablespoons vanilla

* I add a dash of Vietnamese Cinnamon in each glass when serving

La Strada

Submitted by lmcshane on Mon, 12/22/2008 - 10:53.

Life is just one long road and the trip can be painful and it can be beautiful. Yes--deep, deep (possibly creepy) thoughts, but the experience at La Strada, the new restaurant, is not sad, or painful--just beautiful.

Bauhaus & Breuer: Preservation In Atlanta

Submitted by Eternity on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 16:40.

Please read and sign the online petition.

In response to several pieces posted on this site, all of which relate to historical significance of legendary architect, Marcel Breuer, I've decided, at the urgings of fellow blogger and preservationist, Susan Miller,  to post a piece that specifically concerns Breuer's final, monumental, public commission (completed in 1980) that site being The Atlanta-Fulton Central Public Library.  And while I am fully aware that RealNeo is a site devoted to all things Northeast Ohio, because there has been so much discussion concerning local preservation efforts for Breuer Buildings in Ohio, it can only help to bolster both local and national efforts towards educating the public-at-large about the importance of the relationship between civic identity, cultural wealth retention, socio-political integrity and fiscally sane, environmentally sound preservation.

Tremont Retail - Holiday Shopping

Submitted by DesireeSchmitt on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 10:33.

I was searching for the request for Tremont retail recommendations and I can't find it this morning, so I'm posting from scratch.

While retail is still a tough go in Tremont, we have more establishments now than ever before!  Have I also mentioned that if you take a step back and look at the Tremont Entrepreneurs... a big majority are women!

Here is a run down of the latest and greatest retail establishments (no offence to the restaurants & pubs, but most are already famous) ;)

Ohio Film Industry - Other States Move Further, While Ohio Governor Rejects A First Step Ahead With His Veto

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Fri, 12/19/2008 - 20:31.

In the same week that Ohio Governor Strickland vetoes a bill to create a tax credit for those creating film and video production jobs in Ohio, the Illinois Governor (yeah, that guy, the one who's been in the news lately), signed a bill to expand their 20% tax credit to 30%. Do you think he knows something that Governor Strickland does not?

Best Wishes,

Arts and Crafts Movement

Submitted by lmcshane on Mon, 12/15/2008 - 06:51.

In the images of Frank Giglio's home, I saw a house that had been built with some of the tenets of the Arts and Crafts movement. Sadly, we have no appreciation for fine construction and buildings built to last. I google mapped Frank's house and realize now that Google has provided another way to capture the essence of an area: http://www.panoramio.com/

Where was the Cleveland Restoration Society, when their wonks demolished the Historic Giglio Farm

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 12/13/2008 - 13:22.

About the time some wacked-out over-empowered government wonks were demolishing Frank Giglio's Historic Landmark house, on his city-desecrated urban farm, all the "restorationists" in our Society were abuzz about the chance to rub elbows with Timothy "Art Is Back" Rub at the sell-out "36th installment of our Community Luncheon" Cleveland Restoration Society self-love-fest, held last week at Wyndham Cleveland, at Playhouse Square...
