"No Umbrella" Screening at City HallSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 03/27/2006 - 23:30.
The Cleveland Film Festival screening of Laura Paglin's documentary "No Umbrella -- Election Day" quickly sold out, but those who were n't able to get tickets got another chance in the rotunda of City Hall on Monday night. Free and open to the public, the film played at 6 p.m., before a city council meeting. About 100 people were there. Paglin is a local director who has been getting a lot of attention lately. The subject of her short documentary, which recently played at Sundance, is an election day fiasco in ward 7, that took place last November. The "star" of the film is councilwoman Fannie Lewis, who fought heroically for her constituents right to vote that day, when the board of elections failed to provide enough workers and ballots at one poling station. April Gornik: Paintings & DrawingsSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Thu, 03/23/2006 - 01:30.
“April Gornik: Paintings and Drawings”an exhibition going on now through June 4th at the Allen Memorial Art Museum in Oberlin http://www.oberlin.edu/allenart/exhibitions/paintings.html, is important news in the art world and reason for NEO to be proud. This touring exhibition is a mid-career retrospective organized by Dede Young, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College. Oberlin is the last stop on the tour. Neo art lovers have reason to celebrate April Gornik's success. She was born in Cleveland, and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1971-75 before finishing her B.F.A. at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1976. She has lived in New York since the 70s. Her landscapes are in countless Museum Collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Art. Regional pride aside, few art exhibitions are so visually rewarding. Landscape is perhaps the most accessible genre, but Gornik updates the genre and the appeal of her paintings seems to lie in her ability to address the concerns of our century and at least temporarily sooth modern viewers anxieties. I'm pleased to say the 03.21.2006 Excellence Roundtable featuring Steven Fong gave PD Architecture Critic Steven Litt a chance to catch up with Dean Fong, and be the first to learn huge news for this region... See http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/entertainment/ So says Steven Fong, the new dean of KSU's College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Fong, who assumed the post at KSU in December, described his plans publicly for the first time Tuesday in an interview following a public forum at the university's Urban Design Collaborative in Cleveland.

Pittsburgh’s Cultural TrustSubmitted by Martha Eakin on Sat, 03/18/2006 - 19:42.
Is there any organization in Cleveland that would be the equivalent of the Cultural Trust in Pittsburgh? I note that one project of Pittsburgh’s Cultural Trust is to “create a residential riverfront neighborhood that is integrated with the Allegheny riverbank. The main goal is to create a place so animated by restaurants, a park, public art and shopping areas that locals and out-of-town visitors will consider it a must-see destination.” To this end the Trust has selected four architectural planning/development teams from around the US and beyond to submit plans. I happened to recognize the name of the Dutch architectural firm, MVRDV, that is the proposal designer for Team B.

NEO Knows one of my favorite artists: Dana PatersonSubmitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 03/17/2006 - 01:40.
You can't hide your affection for artist Dana Paterson's art, as it lights wherever it hangs. Today, most people would know his art work from the "sustain neo" words shining from the REALNEO office at 812 Huron Road. Having known Dana for many years, I've had the opportunity to see more of his art than probably anyone else, and more and more this guy blows me away.
