ACLU: Obama creating ‘a sweeping immunity doctrine for torturers’

Submitted by Eternity on Fri, 12/11/2009 - 18:01.
The Raw Story - The nation's pre-eminent civil rights organization ACLU on Thursday slammed President Obama for shielding the Bush administration from accountability for its "dangerous torture policy," and insisted that this "lack of transparency" severely threatens the future of constitutional liberty in the United States.

"The Bush administration constructed a legal framework for torture," Jameel Jaffer, Director of ACLU's National Security Project, said in a confere

Submitted by Roldo on Fri, 12/11/2009 - 17:26.

American Prospect finds a number of factual errors in Matt Taibbi’s critique of President Barack Obama’s economic record. Indeed, it calls his piece in Rolling Stone “a factual mess.”

Lauding Obama's Republican agenda, Conservatives like Palin lavish praise

Submitted by Eternity on Fri, 12/11/2009 - 10:18.

Max Eternity - Who would have thought one year ago that Barack Obama would become the new hero of the Republican right? High-profile Republicans like Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin once called Obama a socialist, decrying his very presence as the downfall of America.

Rolling Stone Magazine: Obama's Big Sellout

Submitted by Eternity on Thu, 12/10/2009 - 20:25.

Matt Taibbi @ The Rolling Stone - Barack Obama ran for president as a man of the people, standing up to Wall Street as the global economy melted down in that fateful fall of 2008.

REALNEO Song of the Day: Tomorrow Never Knows, by John Lennon, RIP

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Thu, 12/10/2009 - 19:01.

As Eternity remembers, John Lennon passed away 29 years and a few days ago. I remember exactly where I was when the news hit me he died... I was walking down Broadway, in New Orleans, on the way to class and I saw a sheet hanging across a shotgun porch with RIP John Lennon painted in large letters - a pre-Internet shout-out of outrage, remembrance and sorrow.

That was a moment when I realized, Tomorrow Never Knows... best ever, from the Beatles... Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream...

DOES CLEVELAND REALLY NEED A GARBAGE TAX?

The flow of federal stimulus money into Cleveland makes me wonder why Mayor Frank Jackson and his merry elves at City Council need to burden residents with a garbage tax.

Norman Solomon for TruthOut - Eloquence in Oslo cannot change the realities of war.

As President Obama neared the close of his Nobel address, he called for "the continued expansion of our moral imagination." Yet, his speech was tightly circumscribed by the policies that his oratory labored to justify.

Having already snubed The Dalai Lama, Obama prepares to bail on Nobel Peace Prize Committee

Submitted by Eternity on Wed, 12/09/2009 - 21:22.

Max Eternity - Bowing to pressure from the Chinese government earlier this year, President Barack Obama snubbed the Dalai Lama by refusing to meet with him while he was in town, visiting Washington D.C.  Now in a second show of indignance toward those who espouse peace, sources have learned that Obama will not be attending the traditional ceremonies of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee when he arrives in Oslo this month to pick up his Nobel Award.

Africa confronts Obama on his eco-climate duplicity (VIDEO)

Submitted by Eternity on Wed, 12/09/2009 - 16:31.

Naomi Klein @ Mother Jones - The highlight of my first day at COP15 was a conversation with the extraordinary Nigerian poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey, chair of Friends of the Earth International. We talked about the fact that some of the toughest activists here still pull their punches when it comes to Obama, even as his climate team works tirelessly to do away with the Kyoto Protocol, replacing it with much weaker piecemeal targets.

Barack Obama's "Faux Populism"

Submitted by Eternity on Wed, 12/09/2009 - 15:29.

Robert Scheer - Barack Obama’s faux populism is beginning to grate, and when yet another one of those “we the people” e-mails from the president landed on my screen as I was fishing around for a column subject, I came unglued. It is one thing to rob us blind by rewarding the power elite that created our problems but quite another to sugarcoat it in the rhetoric of a David taking on those Goliaths.
