BUFFALO, NY SAVES STRUCTURAL SKELETON OF BUILDING SIMILAR TO BREUER'S CLEVELAND AMERITRUST TOWER

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 01/21/2008 - 19:26.

The 15 story Dulski Federal Building in Buffalo, New York is undergoing a down to the steel skeleton re-hab.   This building was constructed in the early 1970’s, and besides the time of its construction, shares other similarities with the Breuer designed Ameritrust Tower built in 1971 in Cleveland, Ohio.

TOWN CRIER RINGS IN CUYAHOGA COUNTY BICENTENIAL - BUT NOT ON AGENDA

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Wed, 01/16/2008 - 16:46.

The January 14, 2008 Cuyahoga County Commissioner's meeting started sounding much like a New England Town Meeting.

Coming down the hall towards the fourth floor Commissioner’s public meeting room, the Town Crier's sharply ringing hand bell competed with his yells of  Hear Yea! Hear Yea!

BREUER GETS REPRIEVE - CAN K & D GET THE FUNDS FOR THIS PROJECT IN THIS MORTGAGE CLIMATE?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 01/15/2008 - 13:18.

There was only one bid for the Breuer designed Ameritrust Tower opened this morning at 11:00 AM by Cuyahoga County.  That bid was submitted by K & D Development, who are the developers of the Stonebridge Condos on the west side of the Flats next to the Detroit Superior Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio.

The above photo shows the artist's rendering of the K & D development proposal which, in my opinion, will nicely emphasize the Breuer Tower. K& D put the cost of the development at$ 200 million.

CLEVELAND GOES BACK TO BEAVERS - CIRCA 1836

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 01/13/2008 - 13:38.

The oldest church building in Cuyahoga County is just off Detroit and W25.   The plaque on the front of St. John’s Episcopal Church reports that "fur trading" is what brought the minister, Phineas Shepard to the Cuyahoga area in 1836.

ATTNY COHEN AND CLEVELAND SUE WALL STREET BANKS - WAS SUB-PRIME DISASTER PREDICTABLE?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 01/12/2008 - 20:49.

On Friday January 11, 2008 Cleveland, Ohio Mayor Frank Jackson announced that the City was filing suit against 21 banks/financial firms.  The suit alleges that the defendants created a public nuisance in Cleveland.  The alleged  nuisance was created through issuances of thousands of “sub-prime” loans which are alleged by the City to have caused the abandonment, vacancy, and subsequent demolition of thousands of Cleveland residential buildings.

IF YOU WANT TO WORK IN CLEVELAND - CHECK THE FENCE HAS "JOB OPPORTUNITIES"!

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 01/10/2008 - 12:51.

One thing I find hard to take is vapidness.
Another thing I find hard to take is my tax money being absolutely wasted.

And yet another peeve of mine is my tax money being wasted on pc spin - spin which is intended to make me think that my tax money is actually doing something useful – when in fact it is being wasted.

URBAN BRANDING - TRUTH OR LIES?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 01/06/2008 - 14:33.

Carl Pope told  his audience at Levin College that today's branding strategies no longer involve an image (like the Coke logo/bottle or the Mercedes three point star) - branding today is just a phrase.

GREATER CLEVELAND VOTER COALITION AND DAVE'S SUPERMARKETS ADVANCE OUR DEMOCRACY

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 01/05/2008 - 19:21.

Sam Heide (seated at table) working with the Greater Cleveland Voter Coalition on Saturday afternoon, January 5th, 2008 helped register prospective voters at Dave’s Supermarket in Shaker Square.  Cold and rainy outside - warm, well lit, gregarious and non-adversarial atmosphere inside the store.  Great place to meet the neighborhood.

free wall graffiti cleveland ohio

I spoke with the auto wrecker which is just under the bridge from the free wall today.  He isn't happy with the graffiti workers because when the graffiti is on the junk yard fence, the city inspectors make the junk yard paint over the graffiti.

So, please, put the graffiti on the bridge abuttments, not on the private junk yard fence!

WHISKEY ISLAND - NEW COUNTY BRIDGE TAKES SHAPE

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 01/04/2008 - 21:42.

Ed Hauser introduced me to Whiskey Island a few years back, and since then I have taken a keen interest in this part of Cleveland.  So today I thought I would check up on the new bridge which the County promised - to replace the former one lane bridge which was located next to the rail road tracks just before you get to the Whiskey Island Marina and Wendy Park.

The Buffalo News reports today that the complicated gearboxes on the Clipper wind turbines in Lackawanna, New York have caused the facility to shut down.   The photo above was taken in September of 2007 and shows the eight Clipper turbines on the old Bethlehem slag heaps with Buffalo in the left hand background.

CARL POPE SEEKS "THE MIND OF CLEVELAND"

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 12/30/2007 - 15:00.

Carl Pope is in Cleveland and on December 4, 2007 I heard him present his  (second to last of ten public presentations)   “mind of Cleveland” “bill board public art”  project at Cleveland State University’s (CSU) Levin College forum.

ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 12/27/2007 - 22:36.

When I visited The Art Institute of Chicago there was an icy rain coming in off of Lake Michigan.  The sky was slate gray and at two in the afternoon the headlights and tail lights of the cars on South Michigan Avenue reflected off the shiny wet asphalt as I crossed.   Getting inside the warm lobby of the museum felt good.   A $12.00 ticket provides entry to the galleries.  I hadn’t been here before – I had pleasant surprises ahead.

WILL MYERS UNIVERSITY BECOME AN F1 VISA FACTORY? WILL “STUDENTS” WORK AT THE CLEVELAND CLINIC?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 12/24/2007 - 18:06.

On December 14, 2007 Judge Gaul presented University of Northern Virginia LLC’s president, Mr. Ho, to Myers’ students and the media at Myers University in Midtown, Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Ho’s English is a bit difficult to follow, but what I made out was that Mr. Ho had in the past been a professor, and he still considers his relationship to the various for profit schools he operates as that of a professor – Mr. Ho is not currently teaching as a professor, but is negotiating the take over of the Myers Board of Trustees.  As of December 20 Mr. Ho had appointed eight of his candidates to the “Board” with Judge Gaul’s approval.

Mr. Ho (center with glasses), and his associate Mr. Lee (on right with glasses and striped tie) went on to say that it was their intention to expand the student population at Myers by attracting foreign students – with a goal of about 2,500 students.

Edgewater boats wrapped with color shift

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Mon, 12/24/2007 - 12:44.

Great Lakes marinas are lonely places in the winter.   Everyone takes their boats out of the water and wraps them up in shrink plastic - or blue tarps.   I shifted the color spectrum in Photoshop to make the blue tarps red, and the yellow-painted mooring poles shifted to green.

INTERNET FACILITATES PUBLIC WILL AROUND THE WORLD, AND IN CLEVELAND, OHIO WITH BREUER

LONG ROAD TO THE SCRAP MARKET IN CLEVELAND, 0HIO

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sun, 12/23/2007 - 13:28.

I stopped and spoke with these two fellows to check on the current prices paid for scrap steel- a nickel a pound or $100.00 per ton.

They were happy to converse, but weren't keen on being photographed up close.

Each of their shopping baskets had, I would estimate, between 100lbs and 200lbs of rusty cast iron and steel - a 1 inch diameter steel rod about 3 feet long, a piece of angle iron, what looked like a plate that goes under the rail road rail and through which the RR spikes are hammered, etc.   These fellows had been gleaning the fields around the TriC area and were headed on Saturday to the scrap yard at E55th and 490.

DRIVEWAY WITH A CONSCIENCE

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 12/21/2007 - 16:57.

Louie (on the left) is lugging one of the 75 pound precast concrete waffle blocks.   Each block covers about 1.5 square feet.  At $12.00 each, or $8.00 per square foot, this is a little more expensive than having a concrete driveway installed.

Homeless home under Free Stamp in Cleveland

10.18.11 Occupy Cleveland needs a permit for Willard Park and for Public Square.   Downtown Cleveland Alliance needs access for Xmas decor. Right.

Christmas in Cleveland will be hard for many.

But some have shelter, colored with red, white, and green.

The FREE STAMP is a negative, as is much of Cleveland.
