University Circle Incorporated growing function, context and identitySubmitted by Norm Roulet on Sun, 04/23/2006 - 22:20.
For so many reasons, University Circle and its institutions and the surrounding neighborhood are core to what I value in NEO, and I look forward to seeing all that continually expand in significance to me, the region and world. But, University Circle is a small geographic domain, which must be optimized for 21 organizational stakeholders, and their 1,000,000s of stakeholders, including everyone associated with Case, University Hospitals, the VA, CIA, Cleveland Museum(s), Institute of Music, Orchestra, etc., and all others in the community. In visioning for a better region and future here, consider a broader interpretation of University Circle from the small cultural, healthcare and university center of Cleveland to the center of the entire University Community of NEO.

"No Umbrella" Screening at City HallSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Mon, 03/27/2006 - 23:30.
The Cleveland Film Festival screening of Laura Paglin's documentary "No Umbrella -- Election Day" quickly sold out, but those who were n't able to get tickets got another chance in the rotunda of City Hall on Monday night. Free and open to the public, the film played at 6 p.m., before a city council meeting. About 100 people were there. Paglin is a local director who has been getting a lot of attention lately. The subject of her short documentary, which recently played at Sundance, is an election day fiasco in ward 7, that took place last November. The "star" of the film is councilwoman Fannie Lewis, who fought heroically for her constituents right to vote that day, when the board of elections failed to provide enough workers and ballots at one poling station. April Gornik: Paintings & DrawingsSubmitted by Evelyn Kiefer on Thu, 03/23/2006 - 01:30.
“April Gornik: Paintings and Drawings”an exhibition going on now through June 4th at the Allen Memorial Art Museum in Oberlin http://www.oberlin.edu/allenart/exhibitions/paintings.html, is important news in the art world and reason for NEO to be proud. This touring exhibition is a mid-career retrospective organized by Dede Young, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College. Oberlin is the last stop on the tour. Neo art lovers have reason to celebrate April Gornik's success. She was born in Cleveland, and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1971-75 before finishing her B.F.A. at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1976. She has lived in New York since the 70s. Her landscapes are in countless Museum Collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Art. Regional pride aside, few art exhibitions are so visually rewarding. Landscape is perhaps the most accessible genre, but Gornik updates the genre and the appeal of her paintings seems to lie in her ability to address the concerns of our century and at least temporarily sooth modern viewers anxieties.
