The Artists Archives is proud to take part in the exhibitions and celebrations commemorating the centennial of Viktor Schreckengost’s birth with an unusual show of original drawings and objects from the collection of the prominent Cleveland-based design firm Nottingham – Spirk.
Schreckengost has been a seminal figure in his own right in contemporary American design since the 1930’s. As an educator he has impacted countless students, influencing three generations of commercial and industrial designers.

“The School of Viktor Schreckengost” explores one corner of that ever-widening sphere of influence, displaying a selection of Viktor’s original studies and objects designed for mass consumption, plus a selection of familiar objects created by seven of his former students – familiar because they have become part of our daily lives.

Opening Reception March 17, 2006 from 5-8pm. This event is free and open to the public, RSVP unnecessary but please feel free to call 216-721-9020 for further details. Please note that across the hall The Sculpture Center’s annual On a Pedastel show, 3/10 – 4/14/06 was selected this year by Viktor Schreckengost. Together the two exhibits offer a unique chance to glimpse the mind of one of the past century’s most celebrated designers.
New hours, during exhibitions only: Wed. – Fri. 10am – 4pm, Sat. 12 – 4pm, admission free and open to public. Groups welcome: off-hour gallery tours can be arranged by appointment, if necessary. AAWR is an independent entity, self-sustaining through a fee charged to Archived Artists for storage space utilized. It is also supported through grants, contributions, and fundraising activities. Selections of Archived work are shown at various corporate locations throughout the region, thus another source of revenue is the fee charged for such corporate memberships.

Sculptor Matthew Barney's five Cremaster movies have become an art-world sensation. But few have seen the complete film cycle, named for the muscle that regulates the height of the testicles in the male body. Cremaster 1 is set in a hovering Goodyear blimp, where a woman arranges grapes into geometric patterns that a bevy of chorus girls re-create on a blue Astroturf football field below. Cremaster 2 is a mythopoeic western that encompasses executed Utah killer Gary Gilmore (Matthew Barney), legendary escape artist Harry Houdini (Norman Mailer), bees, cars, country dancing, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and stunning scenic vistas. The last-completed film in Matthew Barney's Cremaster cycle is the longest, grandest, and most accomplished. Shot in locations ranging from Ireland and Scotland to the Chrysler Building and the Guggenheim Museum, this surrealistic, dialogue-less epic embraces myth and history while offering up a series of visually staggering vignettes illustrating man's age-old proclivity to create and destroy. During the course of this inscrutable but fascinating "spaces" odyssey, Barney confronts Masons, chorus girls, punk rockers, a half-cheetah woman, and the architect of the Chrysler Building (played by artist Richard Serra). 35mm. 178 min.

You may have read the reviews but have you seen the show yourself? Lilian  Tyrrell is one of the best artists in NEO, perhaps in the United States. An exhibition of her work at Spaces Gallery is in its last days and closes with a reception Friday evening (see the Realneo calendar for details).

Peggy Kwong-Gordon, MOCA featured 2006 PULSE artist, whose exhibition, Life Studies, is now on view at MOCA talks about her approach to art-making with friend and fellow artist, Douglas Max Utter. A Visual artist himself, Utter exhibits nationally and internationally and is the distinguished recipient of three Ohio Art Council Fellowships. He is also co-founder and contributor to Angle: A Journal of Arts and Culture and his reviews are published in Art Papers, Northern Ohio Live, The Cleveland Free Times, Ceramics Monthly and Fiber Arts.

The Digital Photography Special Interest Group of the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group will host a presentation by computer professional Phillip  Williams on the GIMP, a FREE open source graphics creation and manipulation application similar to Adobe Photoshop.  The meeting will be a short "course" showing how to use the GIMP to do common digital imaging tasks, such as manipulating a photo, removing red eye, correcting colors, resizing images and changing them to black & white.

It is only fitting for Realneo users to take some time to remember the artist Nam June Paik. In his 73 years, his ground breaking work changed art and the world. In the 60s he was the first artist to make media his medium. He is widely considered the inventor of video art. He is also credited with coining the familiar phrases "information super highway" and the "future is now." If you have visited the current exhibition at MOCA, All Digital, it was Paik who led the way and made it possible.

Noted author, art historian, Case Professor and captivating speaker will discuss his controversial book Eakins Revealed at The Union Club. Thomas Eakins has long been heralded as one of American's greatest painters and an exemplary American but only because evidence of the darker aspects of his life and career have been suppressed. What good are the arts? As the curator of a local sculpture collection, its a question I ask myself everyday. So I was very eager to hear what John Carey had to say in his address Friday, January 20th at The City Club of Cleveland. Carey, an emeritus professor of English at Oxford University, a noted author, book reviewer and public intellectual spoke about his controversial book published in 2005 titled What Good are the Arts. His talk was well organized and based upon a series of questions he asked himself when he began writing his book. The book is based on Carey's own careful conclusions and thorough knowledge of the many theories on the role of art.

"Understanding the New Dynamic: Art, Technology and the Mind" a symposium that took place this past Thursday at the Bolton Theater of the Cleveland Playhouse was a momentous event -- the first of its kind in North America -- according to the moderators of the event, Lev Gonick, Case's Vice President for Information Technology and Len Steinbach, Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Museum of Art.

If you have been feeling starved for art lately you should find the last half of January very satisfying. Major exhibitions are opening this Friday at MOCA, Spaces and the e.gordon Gallery.

"All Digital" at MOCA features the work of 8 international artists (one of them, Lynn Hershman Leeson, was born in Cleveland and got her B.A. at Case) who create computer generated art.
