Free Food Grows In Cleveland

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Sat, 08/08/2009 - 11:28.

While I was sitting behind Food On The Move, at St. Clair and East 140th, where a friend works, I noticed a pear tree in the lot next door, full of rippening pears. While the lot is well tended, and does not appear "vacant", the lone pear tree is the only occupant. And nobody seems to notice it is there, despite its bounty of free food. There are 100s of pears on the tree - in a market, they would be worth $100s. This lot could contain dozens of pear trees - perhaps 100s - producing $10,000s in income for the owners and those who tended them.

Ward 14: Clark Metro Development Corporation

Submitted by ANGELnWard14 on Fri, 08/07/2009 - 20:36.

All old leadership of Clark Metro are GONE! It has been gone for well over a year...have any of you even attempted to participate that live in Ward 14 since then? NO! I can tell you, because your names are not on the meeting sign in sheets!

In April there was an annual meeting to clean the slate, elect an entirely new BOD, and invite community participation. Less than 20 folks out of almost what, 30,000 showed up.

Krishna's Gone

Submitted by Eternity on Fri, 08/07/2009 - 17:00.

the light is gone.
my beloved Krishna has returned;
not to me, but to his heavenly home.

who knew the universe and the stars could retreat at such a rapid pace.  who paused to think that brilliance could ever come to an end.  and how does it reason to mourn the loss of someone you've felt all your life; being someone you never knew--never met--never touched.

this is the magic and wonder of a legend;
marvelous splendor, leaving a lasting impression
in the blink of an eye, for all of eternity.

PROGRESS - IN TREMONT

Submitted by jerleen1 on Fri, 08/07/2009 - 09:21.

This is a odd and most unusual post for me to put out but I guess stranger things have happened.

Last night I attended a ED/LRP meeting at Tremont West Development Corp.  I don't really know what happened, maybe is has something to do with that old saying "when pigs fly," but for the first time since I've been going to that committee meeting they had all their ducks in a row.

Progress reports and up-dates on a number of issues that have been the center of major concerns clearly indicated that resident voices are being heard.

BIG GAME HUNTING - for BUCKS IN NEO

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Fri, 08/07/2009 - 08:56.

In many NEO communitities, scrabbling for municipal operating cash has led to the licensing of big game hunting.

The biggest game in East Cleveland and Cleveland, Ohio is the BUCK. Image on downhill stretch of N.Taylor before reaching  Euclid.

Who is reviewing this business?  Do I see Frank Russo's decal on the speed cam?

TURNING DOWN HOME DEPOT'S TAX ABATEMENT

Submitted by Roldo on Thu, 08/06/2009 - 11:56.

Enough! This is how cities should greet greedy, hands-out corporate interests that want to play one off against the other. Home Depot doesn’t deserve welfare.

Did the bomb need to be dropped on people to end WWII?

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 08/06/2009 - 08:15.

My dad always said that the war could have been ended with the United States inviting a delegation of Japanese to one of the tests of the atomic bomb.

Or, the United States could have dropped a bomb on an island off the Japanese coast - and announced the next bomb would be on a Japanese industrial zone.

Instead, the US dropped 2 bombs in 3 days on densely inhabited civilian areas.

Ward 14: The Political Wall.... Posting 3....

Submitted by ANGELnWard14 on Thu, 08/06/2009 - 05:10.

Tonight I visited the wall again and made a couple changes. I'd like to whitewall it this week and start fresh...  Despite my opinions and views on the candidates, it's my goal to get these complacent citizens to get involved!!!

After dealing with a few issues tonight from over 10 folks...lit up like the Fourth of July on God Only Knows What....who have NO CLUE as to any of the politics...I guess I find myself wondering what all this passion to make a change is worth?

Hodge and Park Photos

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Wed, 08/05/2009 - 22:09.

To supplement recent reports here on Realneo, images of the Hodge School and Park Buildings would be nice.

If we are to build Realneo into a more dynamic civic journal voice, photo stringers would be nice.

Pay? just your civic sense of being. Until we get the vehicle's speed up.  Even then, the model's not clear.

We will see.

But it is satisfying to be involved and contributing.

one question to each Ward 14 candidate:

I live in what will be the new ward 14 and although I always voted and paid attention to what was going on in my ward (15) I was not one to be overly vocal.

Writers and Readers Series--FREE Sunday programs at Cleveland Public Library continue

Submitted by lmcshane on Wed, 08/05/2009 - 09:21.

With state budget cuts, Cleveland Public Library and libraries across Ohio have lost vital operation funding.

Despite the loss of revenue needed to cover staff costs and Sunday hours at the Cleveland Public Library, the acclaimed Writers and Readers Series will go on thanks to the endowment provided by the Founders Fund.  This earmarked legacy from library lovers remains separate from the general fund.

Social Media – Risks and Rewards, even for the Military

Submitted by Kevin Cronin on Tue, 08/04/2009 - 13:22.

The US Marine Corps decision to ban social media, citing concerns for operation and mission security, is an issue every employer wrestles with, but banning social media is on excessive response, one that forfeits important value for social media, including military recruiting.  Employers, military or otherwise, should develop fine-tuned policies on social media, not comprehensive bans or unqualified endorsements.

NELSON CINTRON JR Supports Residents' Wishes & Rights with ODOT Barrier Walls

Submitted by Nelson Cintron Jr on Tue, 08/04/2009 - 12:44.
I would like to take the time to give you my opinion on the noise barrier walls in Tremont and the West 25th & Denison Ave. areas. It is pretty clear to me in reading the blogs that residents that I have worked with in the past in Tremont- do not want to see walls installed in that neighborhood.

I have had many conversations with residents in the area of West 25th to Denison, while I have been listening to their concerns regarding the lack of representation they have received over the last four years.

GAS LAMPS BURNING 24/7/365 WAY OUT OF STYLE

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Tue, 08/04/2009 - 12:09.

There was a time - about a hundred years ago before the electric arc and bulb - when gas lamps where left burning constantly because their mantles were damaged by burning, cooling, and re-lighting.

Today, there is no excuse to have a gas lamp burning in the day time - or at night for that matter.

Talk about global warming!

Ward 14: GET EMPOWERED: VOTE ON TUESDAY, SEPT 08, 2009...

Submitted by ANGELnWard14 on Tue, 08/04/2009 - 03:15.

So many citizens have not got a clue about what's going on in politics. They don't want to know. They don't pay attention. They don't feel inspired to participate because they see so much corruption of the leadership on the news. The folks who were poised to leave, mostly have left. The few brave, loyal, and tenacious citizens who've stuck around for the duration have watched their quality of life in this community be abused, neglected, and violated by public officials through gerrymandering, redirection of public funding, and neglect of our people's needs.
