Happy Anniversay Terminal Tower, the Grande Dame of Cleveland!

Submitted by Eternity on Sun, 07/12/2009 - 20:19.

Cleveland.com posted a wonderful story about the 79 year old, depression era highrise.  Cleveland should be proud.  Atlanta, my home town, has lots of beautiful towers, but none are as old and stately as this.  All of our skyscrapers are new.

July harvest and why we weed

Submitted by Susan Miller on Sun, 07/12/2009 - 14:45.

On Friday, the harvest took almost the entire day with seven of us working diligently. Toward day's end we were able to get the rest of the tomato stakes pounded into the ground next to their waiting plants, but that was in the last 20 minutes before quittin' time.

In addition to the various greens (mustard, kale, chard, lettuce), basil, fennel, nasturtiums and flowers made into bouquets, we added some new roots to our harvest activities. Beef and eggs do not require the efforts of "down the hill" farmhands.

Long Red Florence Onions (ready for market above and as they were gathered below) were ready to pluck from their beds.

I love orange

This seemed to be a great weekend for orange. Green, too. They are opposites on the color wheel. First, baby carrots just plucked from the soil.

A timid step

Submitted by Ed Morrison on Sat, 07/11/2009 - 08:59.

Yesterday, Commissioners Jones and Hagan symbolically voted their colleague, Jimmy Dimora, off the island. With this single act, they are hoping to distance themselves from the culture of corruption that pervades Cuyahoga County.

It's not so easy.

Corruption represents the misuse of public power for private profit. It flourishes with too much room for discretion by public officials combined with too much secrecy.

Random Friday photos

Submitted by lmcshane on Sat, 07/11/2009 - 06:40.

Yesterday, I happened to be off (I work Saturdays), so I got to take it easy and enjoy the sights and sounds of Cleveland.  Here are a few images from the Ingenuity Festival, to Tregoning Gallery (featuring the wonderful Matt Dibble), and, finally, to Sokolowski's University Inn.  A great day in the city.

HOORAH ! - Why is the US Flag diplayed Upside Down?

Why is the US Flag diplayed Upside Down?

The upside down U.S. flag is an official signal of distress. It is not meant to be, and is not officially recognized as any type of disrespect when so displayed for the right reasons. To the contrary, here is the relevant part of the US Code of Laws regarding how to fly the flag when in distress:

Will Allen's "A Good Food Manifesto for America"

Submitted by Norm Roulet on Fri, 07/10/2009 - 05:10.

Thanks to Laura McShane for posting this morning a comment linking to Will Allen's "Good Food Manifesto" on his Growing Power blog. I, and millions of other people, became aware of Will last Sunday, when he was featured in the New York Times Sunday Magazine article "Street Fighter", but folks who follow local foods best practices surely knew of Will long before.

Michael Jackson - a local influence

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Thu, 07/09/2009 - 16:41.

This well dressed (I wear bow ties too) fellow has me mystified.

Set up at an intersection where it was too busy for me to stop and talk with him, he held a newspaper cover of Michael Jackson, a pie, a slice of cake, and the glass vials you see in his left hand.   He had a cooler - on the curb out of the image - set up as a sort of desk.

OHIO IS SINKING - WHERE ARE YOU GOV. STRICKLAND?

Submitted by Roldo on Thu, 07/09/2009 - 15:40.

No wonder President Barack Obama’s and Gov. Ted Strickland’s popularity in Ohio is sinking like a lead weigh in water. New job figures for the start of July stink. Again.
