Daffodil Days

Submitted by lmcshane on Sun, 04/24/2011 - 09:48.

Thank you for today's header--if you haven't already done so, get out on this fleeting weekend to enjoy the cherry blossoms and the daffodil days in University Circle and at parks throughout NEO.

I was fortunate to be up early, both yesterday and today, to hear the robins and the sweet plaintive call of the white-throated sparrow.

The Elephant Keeper

Submitted by lmcshane on Fri, 04/22/2011 - 06:10.

I haven't read Water for Elephants, yet, but I imagine it taps into a supernatural energy I once felt at a young age--so I will read it for the teens and most likely push it as a young adult novel.

Elephants are symbolic.  They are forever old and young at the same time.  I know the feeling. And, of course, they say--elephants never forget.  I have my own elephant memories.

THE GREATEST PUBLIC HEALTH HAZARD THE WORLD HAS EVER WITNESSED.

People of Japan.    People of The World.     Take notice of what Helen Caldicott is saying about the dire consequences for 'all of us' over the next few decades from the near-destruction of the FUKUSHIMA DAICHI PLUTONIUM-ENRICHED NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.

Cannatax Demystified

Submitted by Lory Kohn on Wed, 04/20/2011 - 11:14.

Cannabis Commerce founder and journalist Lory Kohn, at KushCon II

In a nation crying for new industry, with budget shortfalls impacting every level of government, cannabis commerce is a shining star hovering on the economic horizon. Cannatax generated from cannabis commerce could provide a lifeline for embattled governments desperate to maintain vital services in the face of rising costs.

It isn’t, because demonization derived from the 1930s is responsible for marijuana “activists” settling for medical marijuana initiatives state-by-state instead of working together to overturn federal prohibition altogether – which effects legalization for every state in one fell swoop. This is a bizarre situation, where a group of like-minded citizens who overwhelmingly outnumber the opposition behaves like a minority which has to beg, plead, and cajole for “patients’ rights” instead of everybody’s rights.

My dear RealNEO family, I haven't posted in a long time or even "lurked" due to new health issues as well as my normal fatigue, balance and speech troubles due to my brain lesion, fibromyalgia, frequent migraines and the backlog of things to do that built up as a result.

Now I need some help, roses don't wait. If you can help me with anything, send me an email via this site And whether you can help or not, remember, everyone is always invited to come see the roses bloom.

SOCIETY UNRAVELING - Retro-fitting anti-sleep bench bars to our architecture

Submitted by Jeff Buster on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 09:32.

You are looking at a little signal about our society - short metal bars which are an indication of a big problem.

20, 30, 50 years ago these little bars weren't necessary in the US.

Today we face the unpleasant task of keeping people from sleeping, and living, in public places.  Especially warm places (image above) next to building HVAC exhaust grates.

TAX PAYER RECEIPTS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE

Submitted by ANGELnWard14 on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 16:25.

Received this from the White House today...

Good afternoon,

Have you ever wondered how much of your own tax dollars actually go to support foreign aid? To support education? Well, now you can find out – and you might be surprised. In his State of the Union Address, President Obama promised that this year, for the first time, American taxpayers would be able to go online and see exactly how their federal tax dollars are spent. So today, we’re announcing the first-ever federal taxpayer receipt.

MIT nuke nuclear reactor on Massachusetts Ave in Cambridge

This is a tiny 5 megawatt nuclear reactor right in the middle of  Cambridge, Mass.   It has been in operation since the mid 1950's.  MIT wants to up it to 10 megawatts.

All the waste heat from the reactor is dissipated through the wet cooling tower - in the image above only the left half of the cooling tower is in operation.

FBI ‘vault’ discusses Utah UFOs, other secrets - a revamped FBI website for documents that have been released through the Freed

Submitted by Quest-News-Serv... on Fri, 04/15/2011 - 00:56.

On April 4, 1949, FBI agents in Utah sent a cable marked “urgent” to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. It said an Army guard at the Ogden Supply Depot, a Logan policeman and a Utah Highway Patrol officer in Mantua each saw from miles apart a UFO — which they said exploded over Utah.Under the title “Flying Discs,” the cable said they “saw a silver colored object high up approaching the mountains at Sardine Canyon” that “appeared to explode in a rash of fire.
