Could it be just over a year since Masumi Hayashi and John Jackson were killed by a senseless psycho ...? As the senseless killing escalates all around NEO today, it is easy for the dead to become forgotten by so many they touched in many ways, in life... or lost to all. Where NEO has seen a community that remembers is those who love the arts, as the past year has seen many shows of love and respect for Masumi and John, the most recent being a wonderful exhibition that opened last week at Doubting Thomas Gallery, called To Masumi. A collection of special works by many who love and remember Masumi, this is a powerful statement on what lasts and matters in life and beyond. Props to the organizers of this exhibition and to Doubting Thomas - really fantastic... amazing musicians performing in the front Gallery, Michael Doc Dreyfuss and Bill Weita... haunting yet alive... see today's header... image below...

About a month ago a hapless judge in Cleveland, under intense pressure from a community posse, sentenced two young men to 2000 hours of community service (no affirmation intended/rebutted re: Planetizen viewpoint) to be served over 5 years.

Arabella Proffer has created a fictional National Portrait Gallery, whose works are a juxtaposition of modernity with aristocratic tradition. Her subjects sport twenty-first century punk and gothic styles as part of their formalwear, but without the mohawks and piercing, each portrait resembles typical late medieval or Renaissance portraits. Proffer notes: "this series centers around balance of counter-culture and tradition; how punk or gothic styles might be adopted by royalty and socialites for serious portraits left as a reminder of their legacy. What was once considered rebellious has now become widely accepted. Traditionally, each portrait preserves what may later be a historical moment. In the case of this series however, some the 'historical' moments are of my own imagination"
Labor & Industry by photographer Roger Mastrionni will continue into Tremont's next ArtWalk - Friday, October 12th 6 - 9 pm when we will again produce a visual and aural experience that compliments the art show - filling the space with the stunning cinematic "silent movie" images of steel and Tremont from the award-winning Deerhunter splashed across a long white movie screen (rescued from the Mayfield Cinema). Mixing industrial-based sounds from the '80s and 90's with an ecletic mix of soundtrack and melodies electronic and otherwise in the background - branding the space - former Brown's Market.
Bringing new light and focus to these themes which will be further displayed at the Steelyard Heritage Center - also opening the dialogue on the current state of affairs of industry and particularly steel in Cleveland.

The following article has been forwarded to David Ellison (because of Ellison’s co sponsorship – with Sally Levine - of the Marcel Breuer re-design re-use exhibit at Ingenuity Fest which is linked here) by Berlin architectural journalist Ulf Meyer. The article will appear in NEUE ZURCHER ZEITUNG (according to Meyer one of Europe’s best papers). Google translator won’t work on the older windows system from which I am now posting. A quick translation from someone would be great!
Perhaps we can embarrass the ignorant and financially arrogant Cuyahoga County Commissioners into backing off of their dogmatic demolition plans…..

I just got the email below, from the head of a local arts not-for-profit to remain un-named, to protect the innocent: "Norm -- i just wanted to make sure you knew about the "sales pitch" we are about to get.". I read on to see that tax junkie CPAC - Community Partnership for Arts and Culture - is on the Cuyahoga County junk again, now hustling artists and arts organizations to tax themselves and patrons for the benefit of the dealers. Read on... anyone going to this who can cover for realneo?... Note: " RSVP’s are required!" An important addition was made to The John and Mildred Putnam Sculpture Collection, located on the campus of Case Western Reserve University and the grounds of University Circle, with the installation of a fantastic steel sculpture by masterful sculptor and Cleveland Institute of Art President David Deming, which is titled "Inner Circle". Located by the Case residential village, across from the Starbucks, at the intersection of East 115th, Juniper and Bellflower, this work is a great addition to an important art collection, curated by Evelyn Kiefer, that makes University Circle a much more inspiring and remarkable place, with public art.

The Women's Council Speaker Series Committee is pleased to welcome Dr. Landau, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University. She has taught in the Cleveland Museum of Art/CWRU Joint Program in Art History since 1982, with courses specializing in 20th-century American and European art and theory, particularly Abstract Expressionism. Considered the leading expert on Jackson Pollock, she is the author of the definitive book on the artist (1989).

Tiger Swallowtails fed in this morning’s sun with their long straw-hose like proboscis sucking up nectar. Then summer showed its might with heat, humidity, huge thunderheads building during mid day culminating in slamming lightening, rolling thunder and a 2” downpour replete with hail – strange that it is cold enough up above us for ice to form, while at the ground level it is a frying pan. All the trees received their wild wind pruning.

I have been following a thread on BrewedFreshDaily concerning Michael Polensek’s radical letter – and whether recreation centers might make a difference to our kids Mr. Polensek’s ward has been promising to build a youth rec center for about 17 years but can’t seem to get it done.

The IngenuityFest public outreach efforts of Sally Levine and David Ellison are intended to prevent Cuyahoga County from demolishing Cleveland’s Marcel Breuer designed Ameritrust Tower. Ms. Levine and Mr. Ellison present a “Right vs Might” poster boy case of passionate public citizens who are “right” going up against “City Hall” “might”. Except in this case it isn’t “City Hall”, but “County Hall”.

Womens' forearms definitely became homo erections; stiletto pumps – maturing desire or just vertical ambulatory evolutionary expression?

The Fine Art & Antiques Auction preview began on Wednesday and continues through Saturday (11-8 Wed. - Fri. & 11-6 Sat.) but Friday night should be especially fun. From 5:30 - 8 there will a special reception and exhibition of photography by Cleveland artist Ruggero Fatica. Gray's Auctioneers promises to be the new hip place in town to see art, buy art and see and be seen.
