HAPPY 82nd BIRTHDAY, OUR BELOVED, JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL IN CLEVELAND, OHIO

Submitted by Satinder P S Puri on Tue, 01/28/2014 - 20:35.

John Marshall High School opened on January 29, 1932 at 8:30 a.m. at 3952 West 140th Street location in Cleveland, Ohio.

John Marshall High School – an architectural gem – built in 1932 – stood for 81 years before it under went a senseless destruction in 2012/2013 brought about by corrupt politicians (Mayor Frank Jackson & Councilman Martin J. Sweeney) & a visionless & corrupt Cleveland Metropolitan School District -- and their multitude of cronies.

Our community was honored when John Marshall High was landmarked because of its historic and architectural significance.

The high school was a gift given to the City of Cleveland by George M. Hopkinson the British-born Architect who also designed John Hay, Rhodes, and 14 other landmarked schools.

It was a visual beacon for the multitude of residents who viewed it from their homes or walked or drove past it on 140th Street.

John Marshall High was an integral part of our community’s heritage. It was a temple of learning. For over 81 years, it served thousands of high school students who studied a variety of subjects like English literature, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Art, Music, Social Studies, and others within its four walls.

George M. Hopkinson, the architect, enshrined the temple with architectural elements from Ancient Greece – the civilization that gave us the great idea of Democracy, famous philosophers like Plato and Socrates, scientists like Archimedes, and Mathematicians like Euclid and Pythagoras (c2 = a2 + b2).

John Marshall High School’s auditorium was used for the performing arts by young artists. The underground tracks– reminiscent of the Roman catacombs, and the swimming pool – were used both by young athletes and the community.

Unfortunately, in 2012/2013, there was total senseless destruction of the historic building – a crime against humanity -- that shall never be forgotten -- that also resulted in the destruction of the auditorium, swimming pool, and underground running tracks.

There was also a crime against the community: the poisoning of the environment for present and future generations.

And what are we getting as a replacement – a new high school -- -- which should be called the Martin J. Sweeney High School -- a jazzed up warehouse – being built on the cheap -- using cheap materials (cinderblocks) and zero craftsmanship -- without a basement, auditorium, swimming pool, or underground running tracks.

The destruction of historic John Marshall High School was brought about by vote rigging & other irregularities committed by corrupt politicians (Mayor Frank Jackson & Councilman Martin J. Sweeney) & a visionless & corrupt Cleveland Metropolitan School District -- and their multitude of cronies.

May the names of the following who facilitated the senseless destruction of historic John Marshall High School in Cleveland, Ohio – forever live in infamy:

Mayor Frank G. Jackson;
Councilman and former City Council President Martin J. Sweeney;
Councilman Anthony Brancatelli;
Councilwoman Phyllis E. Cleveland;
Cleveland Metropolitan School District;
Chair, Cleveland Landmarks Commission;
Manager of Architecture (Chief Architect), City of Cleveland;
Director of City Planning;
Bellaire Puritas Development Corporation; and
President and those trustees of the John Marshall High Alumni Association who openly advocated for demolition.
